A Mexican God is Round 1032 of Jōji Morikawa's Hajime no Ippo manga series.
Details[]
- Title Page Character(s): Ippo Makunouchi, Genji Kamogawa, Haruhiko Yagi, Shinoda, Alfredo González, Alfredo's Coach
Summary[]
With both boxers in the ring, Mashiba notices that the announcer claims that Alfredo is known as "Mextli," wondering what it means. Mari describes "Mextli" as a god of war and bringer of storms, and a patron of the Aztecs, which can make him the "Mexican Grim Reaper." Ippo, Sendō, and Mashiba notices by just looking at Alfredo that he is strong. As Ippo and Alfredo are at the centre of the ring, the audience notes how Ippo's record is better than Alfredo's, but Ippo hasn't fought anyone outside of the pacific before, and Alfredo has fought many world rankers and defeated them all, believing that if it wasn't for his matches against Ricardo, Alfredo would be world champion. They think that if Ippo can land hits on Alfredo, he will go down, as he is still human. In Ippo's corner, Ippo knows that he can't make the same mistake he made when he went against Kojima, wanting to use the first round to work on being able to dodge Alfredo's left. On the other side, Alfredo is advised by his coach to stay in control. The match begins, and, after Ippo and Alfredo touch gloves, Alfredo notices Ippo has taken the Peek-a-Boo Style, assuming that Ippo wants to close in if he throws any careless shots, while Ippo sees Alfredo's stance: a high guard with both hands away from his chest, a stance that Ippo sees no openings in. Dates observes Ippo and Alfredo's quiet start, telling the audience how it is a better idea for Ippo to observe his opponent than to rush in, as, if Alfredo fights like Ricardo, then he is observing as well, and going on the offence will just have him figure out Ippo's arsenal. Mari asks Sendō, who has experience fighting Mexicans, what his thoughts on Ippo fighting a Mexican for the first time. Sendō notes how whether it is a straight or a hook, they have great range with their left, and the first time fighting a Mexican isn't easy. Ippo wonders if Alfredo's range is any different from his previous opponents. Alfredo begins making a move.
