Details[]
- Title Page Character(s): Ippo Makunouchi, Alfredo González
Summary[]
Ippo and Alfredo begin their close range exchange. Their punches miss at first, then Alfredo begins guarding, and when one punch hits his face, Alfredo spins his neck to nullify the damage. Alfredo begins pulling his arms closer to his body and landing shots through holes in Ippo's sturdy guard. The audience start thinking that Ippo is losing and his legs are shaking. Alfredo plans to make the audience quiet by making them realise it was stupid to expect anything from Ippo. Date notices Alfredo's expression looks like he is either happy, angry, or both, which he thinks is what makes him different from Ricardo. Mashiba thinks Alfredo is fighting on pure rage, comparing him to Sawamura. Alfredo's coach remembers how he put a mask on Alfredo to make him more like Ricardo when he noticed how talented he was when he first saw him. He remembers that Alfredo grew in a part of town where the only form of self-defence was to viciously attack people as if he was a wild animal, and surviving on the street with his fists made him too emotional. He remembers how Alfredo would be savage against his opponents in spars and matches, making him a vicious fighter but also a fragile one who wasn't afraid of getting hit, so he forced him to use Ricardo's textbook style, which also helped him keep his emotions in check. He sees now that the style Alfredo is using now is the perfect combination of savagery weighed against reason. Even though Alfredo's punches are hitting Ippo's block, Ippo still feels great pain and wobbles from them. The audience is shocked that Ippo is losing at close range, thinking that he is going to lose. Kamogawa thinks that with the physical damage of having been knocked down once, and the mental damage of the Dempsey Roll being shut down, if he can't hold it together at close range, he won't be able to get up again.
