Summary[]
Ippo mentions that he is a second now, and that today is his debut. Takamura, surprised and angry, throws a punch at Ippo which is blocked by the bag. Ippo wonders what he is doing, Takamura mentions he got pissed and couldn't help himself. Ippo wants to go inside with Takamura, but Takamura plans on going later, as he has company to take care of first. Takamura states a coded message before asking for Ippo's money. Takamura takes Ippo's wallet and discovers he has no money, as Ippo has been visiting shrines, giving his money to it. Takamura then takes off with Lord, with Ippo's wallet in hand. Ippo complains that he got extorted on the way in, he then notices "extorted" rhymes with "thwarted", so he believes Kimura's opponent will be thwarted. Ippo enters Kimura's room and changes to his clothes as a second, then starts preparing for the match with Yagi. Ippo thinks that Kimura's opponent is doing a ring check and decides to scout him out. There, he notices Kimura's opponent, and gets shocked when he sees Hayami. Hayami greets Ippo, who mentions that he is scouting the enemy. Hayami remembers Ippo is retired and asks if Ippo can't believe that he is still boxing, which Ippo denies. Hayami believes that no one is expecting much from him, but he expects things in himself, and believes he will create a legend. He then asks Ippo if he will cheer for him tonight, Ippo replies that he will. Ippo returns to Kimura, and Kimura wonder how his opponent looked, only to find out that Ippo forgot to watch him after talking to Hayami. Aoki comments that the person fighting two matches before Kimura's is Hayami. Itagaki remembers that he lost to Ippo in the Rookie King Tournament. Aoki continues, that when Hayami lost to Ippo, he went down a weight class and made it all the way to the Japanese Title Match, but lost to Kobashi. Aoki mentions that Hayami's style is similar to Itagaki's, so it might be a good reference for him. Ippo heads out to watch Hayami's match and is shocked when he see's Hayami's famous Shotgun, believing he doesn't even compare to his former self.

- Hanamori Seigo and Shintomi Ryo's names appear on the fight order for the red corner being listed from the BJ Gym. Both are real boxers from the JB Sports Gym.
- Ryūichi Hayami's last appearance in the manga was in Round 290 when he lost to Kenta Kobashi in the JBC junior featherweight title match. However, in Round 461, Kobashi told Ippo Makunouchi that everyone that fought in the Rookie King Tournament (with the exception of Ichirō Miyata, Ryō Mashiba, and Takeshi Sendō) had retired.
