Summary[]
Aoki has Ippo follow him to the Kamogawa gym's rooftop to talk. Aoki explains how Tomiko rushed to the hospital Mashiba is being kept at after hearing details from Kumi. Aoki gives Ippo a note with information of where the hospital is and suggests to ask Tomiko about everything himself. As Ippo rushes out of the the gym, Kimura gives him his wallet with money in it so he can get a cab. Itagaki tells him that he will cover the morning shift at the Makunouchi Fishing Boat and even the next day if Ippo needs it off. Ippo takes a cab to the YokoYoko Integrated Hospital where Mashiba is. Ippo learns from Tomiko that Mashiba's external injuries will take a month to heal, and that there is fear that there is damage to his brain and cervical vertebrae. He also learns that Mashiba is still unconscious. Tomiko tells Ippo that there are things that they will not know until he regains consciousness. Seeing Kumi in the lobby looking down, Ippo wishes to stay until Mashiba opens his eyes, however, Tomiko tells him he can go home as she will let him know immediately when he regains consciousnesses. Tomiko notes that Kumi didn't reach out to him because boxing might have stolen her only relative, so she doesn't want to see nor think about it, and that there is no way she can separate Ippo from boxing. Saddened, Ippo leaves the hospital and sits outside until the next morning.
When Ippo goes back to the Kamogawa gym, he talks to Kamogawa about Mashiba. Ippo tells Kamogawa that while he was only thinking about Mashiba winning or losing, Kumi was only worried about him the whole match, wondering how he is supposed to confront boxing now. Kamogawa claims that a second's highest priority is to make sure their fighter makes it home safely, however, he also wants them to win no matter what, a feeling that gets stronger the more he grows closer to the fighter. Kamogawa believes that seeing a fighter surpass their limits is a thing of beauty. Ippo disagrees, thinking that if they are going past their limits, he should stop them. Kamogawa agrees, however, when he looks into the eyes of someone determined to go through to the end, he wonders if Ippo will not waver at all. Kamogawa thinks that anyone involved in the boxing world will encounter that problem and that he doesn't have a confident answer to Ippo's question. Kamogawa tells Ippo that all he can do is wait and pray for the news that Mashiba is safe and sound.
