Ippo and Shimabukuro are at close range, with Ippo realising he has to fight close range, as Shimabukuro's body strength is stronger. Ippo pushes Shimabukuro's head up to make an opening. Aoki, Kimura, and Itagaki believe that Ippo's punches won't have any power at how close they are, however, both boxers trade powerful blows. Itagaki wonders how they can deliver powerful blows at that range, Kimura states that it is weight shifting and their hips, as all they need is enough room to move their fists. When the bell for the end of the first round rings, the referee squeezes himself between the boxers to stop them. At the corner, Shimabukuro tells his coach that Ippo went into a punching match just as planned. Kamogawa tells Ippo to continue the hitting match and to prepare for a battle of wills. When the second round begins, the two boxers meet in the middle of the ring at close range and begin trading blows for two minutes. Shimabukuro becomes seemingly overwhelmed, however, he notices how Ippo is moving according to his plan, as he will soon have his legs in the sea.
