Summary[]

While watching recordings of Sawamura's matches at his home, Ippo feels a similar feeling in his chest as when he watched Mashiba step on Miyata's foot in the East Japan Rookie King Tournament semi-finals, however, he knew Mashiba did that as his way to not lose, while Sawamura does worse things even though he was winning, making Ippo deny that that is boxing. At the Kamogawa gym, Kamogawa informs Ippo that he will send a reply to Sawamura's gym to accept Sawamura as Ippo's next title defence opponent. Sawamura takes Kawabe to the Hirosue to tell him the news of him fighting Ippo for the JBC title. Sawamura comments on how he couldn't believe that his former teacher Kawabe convinced him to join a boxing gym after no one wanted to deal with him, and thanks to him, he will be number one in Japan. He expresses his love for the world of boxing where he is praised for beating eleven boxers. Kawabe mentions to Sawamura that it is his hard work that causes him to win that he is praised for, however, Sawamura argues that winning in boxing is about beating the opponent down viciously. When Kawabe tells Sawamura that his highly skilled lightning fast counters must be the reason he is so confident, Sawamura notes how good it feels to him when he hits his opponent with a counter. Sawamura then laughs after wondering how Ippo will taste, and if he will be tough or tender. After Sawamura leaves, Kawabe thinks how he put Sawamura in a gym for him to be around more people and learn the meaning of hard work while making friends and having others recognise his hard work, however, he feels as if he put him in the most dangerous place for him to be as a bloodthirsty mad dog. At the Kamogawa gym, Takamura asks Ippo what he will do about the Dempsey Roll's weakness to counters, which Ippo realises how he experienced the Dempsey Roll's destructive power getting sent back to him when he was hit by Shimabukuro in a dual exchange. Takamura notes that a draw was the best Shimabukuro could hope for, while a natural counter puncher like Sawamura will be able to counter it with hardly any risk. Takamura adds that the Dempsey Roll is lost in the pages of history due to modern boxing being ruled by those with great rhythm, speed, and counters, however, one needs high level skills and guts to not by intimidated by the Dempsey Roll. Takamura thought that the only one in the country who got what it takes is Miyata, but Sawamura has both the skill and guts to take it on. Ippo believes that if he fights Sawamura with normal boxing, Sawamura's skills are better than his, so he will gamble with the Dempsey Roll to beat him. Ippo tells the gym members that he has to think of a way to make it so that the technique won't lose to modern boxing, declaring to evolve the Dempsey Roll.
