On the night of the East Japan Rookie King Tournament semi-finals, the audience at the Kōrakuen Hall can't wait for the match to begin as Imai has the potential to become a Japanese champion and Itagaki and Makino are predicted to be even. Mari tells Fujii that she predicts an 8:2 ratio in Itagaki's favour against Makino, as even though Itagaki lost to Makino before, Itagaki has been training with Ippo and Takamura for a while. As the match is about to start, Itagaki and Makino head to the ring. On the way there, Makino is surprised that Atsushi has come to watch and cheer for him. Mari sees that Atsushi is unable to watch due to being in a wheelchair and has the people in front of him to move aside. As Makino's name is called out by the announcer, and Atsushi hears the audience jeer at him, Mari claims that even through the jeers, Makino works hard. As Itagaki and Makino enter the ring, the latter is not worried about the jeering, as he is more worried about Atsushi. Shinoda warns Itagaki that Makino may commit fouls, and for him to not lose his rhythm. As Itagaki waits for the bell to ring, he thinks about how Makino is called the "dark horse", and knows that Makino is someone who grits his teeth and endures until the very end, something that Ippo has shown before, believing that he will be getting a taste of that now. As the first round begins, Itagaki takes up an upright orthodox boxing stance rather than his usual low stance, while Makino takes his Hitman Style. Fujii goes to the audience seats where Mashiba is watching and the latter tells him whether Makino is a copycat or has mastered the Hitman Style will be decided soon. Kimura has bad memories of seeing the Hitman Style, wondering how Itagaki will handle them. As Makino begins throwing Flicker Jabs, Itagaki is able to dodge and block them, but unable to get close. Itagaki lowers his guard. Itagaki thinks that he is nervous and that he just needs to focus.
