Summary[]
Makino falls, and the referee declares a down. As the ten count begins, Makino feels hopeless as he thinks Itagaki is on a different level. When Atsushi falls out of his wheelchair to plead to Makino to get up, Makino manages to get up, remembering that he promised Atsushi he would win. Aoki and Kimura wonder how Makino can even see as Itagaki's punches have enough snap to them to make his eyes swell. Ippo can tell that Makino is getting his fighting spirit back that was once broken. Wanting to do whatever it takes to keep the promise he made to Atsushi, Makino wishes for him to not see what he is about to do. Makino takes on his Hitman Style, and throws a Flicker Jab that Itagaki dodges, and then as starts to throw another Flicker Jab, he purposely tries to elbow Itagaki. Itagaki dodges the elbow, so Makino tries headbutt him as he dodges, however, Itagaki blocks the headbutt with one hand. Mashiba tells Fujii that Itagaki was able to pull it off because he is Ippo's kōhai. Fujii remembers that when Ippo fought Sawamura, he displayed a level of fighting that also took potential fouls into account. As Itagaki leans forward into a more offensive position and begins attacking Makino's guard, he thinks of how he was worried about Makino calling himself a weed, as that would mean he would be like Ippo, who never gives up, but he realises that he was wrong worrying about it. Itagaki knows that Ippo would never cheat, no matter how tough of a spot he was in, and he rooted himself deeply and grew straight and tall towards the direction of the sun. Itagaki thinks Ippo is completely different from Makino, so he has nothing to fear anymore.
