Miyata and his seconds walking to the ring for his match against Sultan

The coach with Ichirō in his match against Sultan.

In order for Ichirō to prepare for his upcoming match against the OPBF featherweight interim champion, Randy Boy Junior, Miyata set up a match against Donnie Sultan, who shared the same fighting style as Ippo, to get rid of any potential rust he might have since he could not spar to due his fists being fractured. When the match arrived, he went to the Kōrakuen Hall to be one of Ichirō's seconds in the match. As the match began, the crowd began to jeer at Ichirō for his decision to cancel his match against Ippo to take on Randy, leading him to feel like he is in an away match with how the crowd is acting. He was impressed after the match ended in Ichirō's victory by knockout in the first round with his Corkscrew Counter. In Ichirō's room at the venue, he asked Ichirō why he used the Corkscrew Counter for the first time in the match when he could have finished Sultan easily without the counter, adding that Randy will surely study the counter now. He was worried about Randy's manager, Mr. Sakaguchi having a plan for Randy against the counter, however, Ichirō revealed that counters will be useless against Randy anyway, shocking him and Kida. He asked Miyata how Ichirō knew anything about Randy, however, Miyata did not know either.

At the Kawahara gym, he watched videos of Randy's matches with Miyata and Kida. He was shocked at Randy's skill after watching the videos and noted that there are only a few Switch Hitters in the world, but he hasn't seen one like Randy before. After Miyata claimed that Ichirō needs to learn how to use genuine uppercuts and that bringing the uppercut specialist Ippo to the gym would be a good way for him to learn first hand, he told Miyata that the boxers at his gym have been stronger since he joined the gym and his mitt practise is excellent, adding that he should have confidence in teaching Ichirō. Miyata decided that he would teach his son how to use them. Later while watching Miyata mitt practise with Ichirō, where Miyata would aim high to make Ichirō use uppercuts more, he was impressed, and believed that his uppercuts are sharp and straight out of a textbook, thinking that there isn't anything lacking.

Later at the Kawahara gym, Takeshi Sendō showed up without notice, trying to get Ichirō to spar with him. he and Kida didn't want to agree to have Ichirō spar with him, however, Ichirō agreed to it. He watched the spar, which ended in the second round after Sendō was pleased that Ichirō understood his strength. Later, after Miyata finished his mitt practise session with Ichirō, he and Kida were worried about Ichirō's harsh weight management, wondering if he will be able to fight.

After the third round, he was excited by Ichirō's performance and noticed that Miyata is more confident in Ichirō's victory. The match ended in Ichirō's victory by knockout in the seventh round using the Corkscrew Counter. When they went to the changing room, he was shocked when Miyata held mitts and wanted Ichirō to attempt to recreate the punch he defeated Randy with again, however, Ichirō was too exhausted. Later at the Kawahara gym, when Ichirō arrived to report that his check up came up fine, he was there he and the other staff members was given thanks by Ichirō.
