Summary[]
Mashiba desperately attacks, but Ippo dodges and realising that he can not win with only his left, he hits him with his right, which he repeats two more times despite his injuries. After Ippo's consecutive body blows, Mashiba exposes his jaw, giving Ippo the opportunity to attack, when the latter attacks however, the former grabs him and holds him in a clinch, immediately stopping the action. The referee orders them to separate, but when Mashiba fails to do so, Ippo continues to deliver more body blows, forcing Mashiba to let go. Mashiba throws a hook, but Ippo dodges under and connects a devastating hook to Mashiba's jaw, and follows with a straight that sends him to the ground. As Ippo notes to himself that he is out of energy, stamina and in pain from his right hand's injury, Mashiba begins to get up with the referee counting. Witnessing his determination, Ippo gets ready to keep fighting, but the referee counts to ten before Mashiba can get up, declaring Ippo the winner. By defeating Mashiba, Ippo has now become the East Japan Rookie King. Kamogawa and Yagi enter the ring to congratulate him on the victory, but they are interrupted by Mashiba who refuses to accept the decision. As Mashiba moves towards Ippo wanting to fight, Ippo responds by respectfully bowing and offering a hand shake. Mashiba in anger hits the floor repeatedly and then turns around and leaves the ring. Later that night at the award ceremony for all the rookie kings of different weight classes, Ippo is awarded the "Most Talented Rookie Award". In Mashiba's room, his sister feels bad about him boxing for her sake. She prepares to beg him to quit, but before she gets the chance, he states how much boxing draws him in and that he would not be able to stop. Ippo, now ranked number ten by the Japanese Boxing Commission, and with the praise of all those who underestimated him, leaves Kōrakuen Hall after his sixth victory. Some time after, Ippo goes to school, where Umezawa and his gang congratulate Ippo on defeating Mashiba and becoming the East Japan Rookie King, they wish him luck on the upcoming All Japan Rookie King Tournament. Ippo informs them that he is withdrawing from the tournament due to his injury, which disappoints the group. Ippo goes to the Yamanaka Bakery to apologise to Mashiba's sister, but when he goes in, he is informed that she quit. Meanwhile in Osaka's Namba district, at the Naniwa Boxing Club, someone is very excited while watching Ippo's fights.
