Summary[]
At his school, Ippo has graduated, and as noted by his teachers, and as opposed to the beginning, "he is very popular". Umezawa and Takemura and Matsuda request a photo with Ippo's fans. After taking pictures with his fans and classmates, Ippo walks with Umezawa, the latter wants to apologise for all the bullying, but is unable to say it. After Umezawa leaves, Ippo encounters Miyata, who tells him that he is leaving Japan. He is travelling to fight strong opponents, and will come back when the gap between Ippo and himself is gone. Hearing this, Ippo notes to himself that he has no time to rest, and is determined to keep working hard. Because of the next event the Kamogawa gym will be participating in, featuring Takamura, Aoki, and Kimura, there is a long list of newcomers for the gym. The aspiring boxers who confuse Ippo with a beginner, tell him to stop being a bother while they check out the gym. Takamura, who is on a diet, becomes annoyed at the sight of so many people, and challenges them to keep up with the roadwork they usually do. At first it seems like the newcomers can keep up, but they eventually start giving up one after the other. On his way after them, Ippo encounters a kid vomiting, and he encourages him. After the roadwork, the only person left, refuses to join as he considers the training to be too difficult. The gym members lose all hope until they see one of them is still running. To their surprise, it turns out to be the vomiting kid, and they leave him for Ippo. Ippo greets the newcomer, and the latter responds by vomiting on his shirt. After the vomiting incident, Takamura names the new member (Naomichi Yamada): "Geromichi". Aoki finds Yamada's wallet, and the latter frantically tries to stop him from opening it. Takamura holds Yamada while Aoki opens the wallet showing a picture Ippo, revealing Yamada to be his fan. They leave Ippo to look over Yamada, so he tries teach him the basics and demonstrates him some moves but Kamogawa reminds him of his injury. The day of Takamura, Kimura, and Aoki's fight, Ippo and Yamada go to the locker rooms and wish Aoki good luck before the fight. When they leave, Ippo shares his experiences as a pro, but they are interrupted by Fujii, who wants to introduce Ippo to the Japanese champion of the featherweight class; Eiji Date.
