Tears of Joy is Round 3 of the Hajime no Ippo anime, which is the adaptation of Jōji Morikawa's Hajime no Ippo series.

Summary[]

Ippo is down, but he gets up like nothing happened, much to Kamogawa and Miyata's surprise. Takamura reminds Ippo that he has to use turtle operation. As the second round starts, Miyata goes towards Ippo, throwing heavy jabs that, after a hit to the body, makes Ippo lower his guard. Miyata connects a punch to Ippo's face, making him go down for the second time. As he is down, Takamura shouts and reminds him that he wants to be a new person, to become a professional boxer. With his willpower, he gets up. Ippo is not able to attack yet, but Miyata rushes him against the ropes. Takamura tells him to get out of there, he gets out by running awkwardly. Miyata, again rushes and jabs him fast. Masaru Aoki and Tatsuya Kimura makes a statement about Miyata not getting to Ippo, making Miyata angry, he throws a strong left body blow. Takamura believes it is over as Ippo trembles. He receives a direct hit by Miyata and runs out of the ropes. As soon as he gets away, Miyata doesn't let him and goes for the head, the gong sounds, ending the second round. At Ippo's corner, Takamura can't believe Ippo can take so many hits, Ippo says that it is because he was being bullied and it doesn't hurt that much. The third round begins, Miyata goes on the offence, hitting Ippo's chin, causing him to go down. After getting up, Ippo attempts to attack, but doesn't land a hit. Miyata then throws a counter, knocking Ippo out onto the ground, ending the spar. As Ippo is passed out, Takamura tells the members to bring a bucket of water. Takamura goes to Kamogawa to tell him that's the reason why he brought him here, Kamogawa immediately agrees and welcomes him to the Kamogawa gym. When Ippo wakes up, he cries tears of joy when he finds out he passed the test and is now a member of the Kamogawa gym.

  • The anime changed the following:
    • In the manga, Genji Kamogawa is wearing a brown business suit. In the anime, he is wearing his white KBG shirt.
    • In the manga, Miyata's father is Ichirō Miyata's second for the spar between Ippo Makunouchi and Miyata. In the anime, he is absent during this spar.
      • As Miyata's father is absent in the anime, Miyata's father's comments are removed, and it is instead Haruhiko Yagi that is watching next to Kamogawa.
    • In the manga, while Ippo is down, Kamogawa counts to three as Ippo is about to get up. In the anime, Kamogawa's count finishes at eight before Ippo puts up his fighting pose.
    • In the manga, after Ippo gets up from his first down, unknown gym members compliment on Ippo still having strength left. In the anime, it is Kamogawa complimenting that he has willpower.
    • In the anime, Masaru Aoki and Tatsuya Kimura appear, watching Ippo and Miyata fight and making comments. They do not appear in the manga until later.
    • In the manga, after Ippo gets up from his first down, Takamura gets more involved, giving him advice and complimenting him on keeping his guard up.
    • In the manga, Ippo goes down a second time from a left straight to the face. In the anime, Ippo goes down from a left hook.
    • In the manga, Takamura is grabbing the ring's ropes as he yells at Ippo for dropping his guard. In the anime, he is smacking the ring's canvas with his hands.
    • In the manga, as Ippo gets hit with multiple body blows, unknown gym members comment on the blows and how it must be painful. In the anime, it is Aoki and Kimura making the comment.
    • In the manga, unknown gym members laugh after seeing Ippo run away from Miyata. In the anime, Aoki and Kimura are the ones laughing.
    • In the manga, unknown gym members comment on how Ippo is not dropping his guard from his face as he gets hit by multiple left body blows. In the anime, it is Aoki who makes the comment to Takamura.
    • In the manga, unknown gym members comment on how Miyata isn't able to beat Ippo, wondering if he punches are weak which makes Miyata use his right. In the anime, it is Aoki who makes the comment.

    • In the manga, after the first round ends, Takamura pulls Ippo towards him and asks how he stood standing. In the anime, this scene is removed.
    • In the manga, unknown gym members comment on how Ippo survived the first round. In the anime, it is Aoki and Kimura who makes the comment.
    • As Miyata's father is absent in the anime, Miyata father's comments to Miyata at his corner are removed. In the anime, Miyata's seconds at his corner are two unknown gym members who make a similar comment that Miyata's father makes.
    • In the manga, Ippo wonders if it was the strength training Takamura had him do that made him resilient. In the anime, the dialog is removed.
    • In the manga, when the second round begins and Ippo takes puts up the orthodox style, Miyata's father believes that it means nothing. In the anime, unknown gym members makes the comment.
    • In the manga, Miyata's father and unknown gym members comment on how good Ippo's jab and Miyata's dodging is. In the anime, it is Aoki and Kimura that makes the comment.
    • In the manga, after Ippo misses his right and rolls on the canvas from the momentum of the swing, Miyata's father thinks that Ippo doesn't know anything but jabs. In the anime, it is Kamogawa who wonders if he knows anything but jabs.
    • In the manga, unknown gym members get shocked after seeing Ippo blow Miyata's hand away with a right. In the anime, it is Kimura who is shocked.
    • In the manga, the second round ends with Ippo missing a second right straight. In the anime, after Ippo misses the second right straight, the second round ends with Miyata almost landing a counter.
