Heartbroken is Round 58 of the Hajime no Ippo anime, which is the adaptation of Jōji Morikawa's Hajime no Ippo series.

Summary[]

As the JBC featherweight title match between challenger Ippo and champion Date ended after Kamogawa threw the towel into the ring, Date successfully retained his title. Date is congratulated by both Okita and Nakadai. Ippo wakes up to the sound of the cheering Kōrakuen Hall, only to see Date wearing the champion belt before him. Date recognises Ippo's strength and feels grateful for having an opponent who made him recover his past feelings. Ippo gets up and accepts a handshake from the champion, while the audience is still clapping. All the people at the Kōrakuen Hall are satisfied with the performances of the night, except for a visibly upset person; Sendō, expecting Ippo to win, is angry at the fact that someone defeated the only fighter who has defeated him. In his bad mood, he has an encounter with Volg where they almost get into a fight, as the latter is upset as well. Fujii believes Date will be challenging the world, and vacating his title so that the new generation of featherweights take control. He thinks the title match will be between the third ranker Volg and second ranker Sendō. He notices Miyata who has returned to Japan, going to an elevator. Miyata hopes Ippo comes back stronger than before. Aoki and Kimura beg Takamura to consider Ippo's feelings and not say what he usually does in these situations. Takamura promises to not make fun of Ippo, but Aoki and Kimura are ready to stop him when he does anyway. When Takamura meets Ippo, he congratulates him, surprising everyone. But immediately after, uses their reactions as an excuse to humiliate Ippo, and they kick him out of the room. Ippo states that it is okay, as that is more like him anyways. Kamogawa apologises to Ippo, but Ippo apologises as well, and thanks him for his coaching. He also begs him to keep watching over him from then on. The next day, Hiroko and Umezawa take care of the work at the boat, while Ippo rests from his match. Ippo wakes up, and read the newspaper article about his fight with Date. He apologises to Umezawa for losing despite all the cheering, Umezawa cheers him up and points out another article. The article is about a match for the newly vacated JBC featherweight title between Volg, and Sendō. At the Kamogawa gym, Ippo tells Kamogawa that examinations on his conditions are not complete, but he shows no signs of brain damage. He then tells Ippo to rest for no less than three months. When Ippo leaves, Kamogawa and Yagi both express relief at the fact that there is nothing serious with his condition, but they know that soon enough he will be feeling the pain of defeat. Bored at his home, Ippo is happy to receive a call from Kumi, who asks about his condition. She is about to invite him out, when Mashiba takes the phone from her with his Flicker Jab, and insults Ippo for losing the fight. She then takes the phone back and asks if he wants to go out with her on Sunday. Ippo accepts but is clearly affected by Mashiba's words. When Sunday arrives, after going around the amusement park, Kumi confesses that she has never been on a date before, because Mashiba would always intimidate anyone interested in her. She also expresses her concern for her brother and states that is the reason for which she became a nurse. While in the haunted house, Ippo who is at first not afraid of anything in it, but instead enjoys how afraid the clinging Kumi is. However, upon noticing a figure resembling Mashiba, he runs away and leaves her behind. Ippo then accompanies Kumi to the train station where they say goodbye to each other as she leaves for home. As he is walking alone, Ippo notices people entering the Kōrakuen Hall, and begins remembering his most recent match. He wonders how happy his friends would have been if he had won the match. He then realises that having a good performance is not enough, since what he really wanted was to win.
