Surpass That Moment is Round 73 of the Hajime no Ippo anime, which is the adaptation of Jōji Morikawa's Hajime no Ippo series.
Summary[]
As the third round begins, Ippo intended to go after Sendō and be the first to attack but finds himself frozen in the middle of his approach. Sendō throws a left jab that Ippo dodges and follows up with a wide left hook, which Sendō also dodges. Ippo sees the opportunity for another attack, but stops again at the sight of Sendō's Smash, which he blocks. This continues as Sendō appears to throw a punch that stops Ippo, but throws a different one at the end. Sendō keeps hitting a guarded Ippo and is disappointed at the fact that he is only guarding. Takamura then reveals to Aoki and Kimura that the reason for which Ippo is backing up, is due to Sendō's feints that have Sakki behind them. Ippo is in so much fear that even when Sendō is no longer hitting, he still backs up, eventually cornering himself. The audience begins to wonder why he does not fight back, and Kamogawa begs him to survive the round and come back for advice. With Ippo cornered and barely blocking punches, Sendō is disappointed as he has waited twenty-one months for the rematch. Deciding to finish the fight, the champion initiates the motion for his iconic Smash. However, after looking at Ippo's eyes, Sendō backs away and the referee marks the end of the third round.
At Sendō's corner, Sendō is asked by Yanaoka why he did not finish the fight, but Sendō says to himself that he thought he saw an incoming punch that was never launched. At Ippo's corner, after hearing Hachi bark in the audience, Ippo realises that he still has what he learned from the training camp, and intends to use it in the fourth round. Seeing the look in his eyes and recognising that it was that look that made Sendō back up, Kamogawa decides he no longer needs to slap him, as he is now ready to overcome the fear and keep fighting. In the audience, Nekota is approached by Kōrakuen Hall officials as they heard a dog bark nearby. Nekota put Hachi into a big sack before they approached and declines seeing a dog, so the officials walk away.
As the fourth round begins, neither fighter takes the initiative. Kumi asks Mashiba what is wrong with Sendō. Mashiba explains that Sendō is hesitating because his animal instincts are making him hesitate before going in because of Ippo's eyes, which are the same eyes he showed at the East Japan Rookie King Tournament finals. Suddenly, Ippo throws the first punch, but Sendō dodges and attempts a Smash that Ippo predicts and successfully nullifies with a punch of his own. Not knowing which are feints and which are actual punches, Ippo comes to the conclusion that he must protect against all of them regardless. Ippo begins his trademark weaving in that usually leads to the Dempsey Roll, but it is stopped by Sendō, who rushes in before Ippo has a chance of actually initiating the move. With the fight at close range once again, Ippo presses forward, dodging punches and landing significant ones of his own. Ippo gets the upper hand in the exchange, landing damaging punches against the champion, but the latter takes a step back and switches to Southpaw style in order to deliver his Deadly Smash. Ippo recognises the technique used against Volg and barely manages to cover up and block it. Despite hitting the guard, Sendō's dominant arm's strength is enough to push Ippo's entire body back.
With Ippo now against the ropes, Sendō relentlessly attacks and corners the challenger. Intending to end the fight, Sendō unleashes a barrage against Ippo, who begins to fall, but it is Sendō who suddenly stops and crumbles to the ground due to getting hit by a Gazelle Punch that countered one of his punches. As the referee begins the count, Sendō starts to stand up but falls right back down. The count continues with the audience cheering for both fighters and Sendō struggling to get up once again. Once he is up, Sendō manages to take his fighting pose right before the end of the count, leaving the referee to decide whether the battle goes on or not. Ippo, knowing that Sendō is not broken yet and will be able to fight, decides to use his Dempsey Roll to finish the fight. When the referee signals for the fight to resume, Ippo immediately rushes in and goes for his Sunday punch, but his legs give in due to the damage sustained throughout the match. Sendō sees the opportunity and prepares to attack, but the referee stands in-between the boxers and ends the fourth round.
At Ippo's corner, Kamogawa praises Ippo for the Gazelle Punch that downed Sendō, deeming it a superb punch worthy of a challenger. At Sendō's corner, Yanaoka tells Sendō not to talk as he needs every second of recuperation time. Aoki and Kimura doesn't think Sendō will be able to recover in the one minute interval. However, Takamura points out that Ippo is in the same boat, as Ippo probably hasn't realised it either that he has a bomb in his hand in the next round. Ippo is sure another chance will come his way, as it is only the beginning.
