The Possibility of Going to the World[]

Monthly Boxing Fan staff discuss Volg's IBF title match and Ippo fighting Alfredo

Monthly Boxing Fan staff discuss Volg's IBF title match and Ippo fighting Alfredo.

At the Monthly Boxing Fan, after seeing the magazine about Volg becoming the IBF junior lightweight champion, Fujii hears from Mari about how Volg has a fondness of Japan, which Fujii wonders why, as he did not have a good time when he was there. A staff member notes how they liked the question section, where Volg was asked if he had anything to say to his rivals. In the interview, Volg answered that he hopes that he doesn't fight them again since he has no idea if he would survive. Fujii mentions how Japan has two boxers that beat the new IBF junior lightweight champion, so the country is nothing to scoff at. The Monthly Boxing Fan staff discuss Ippo's relinquishment of the JBC featherweight title and his upcoming match against the world second ranker Alfredo González, which, if he wins, he will be eligible to challenge the world champion. Fujii comments how he expected nothing less from Kamogawa choosing Alfredo as a warm-up. Mari believes it will not be an easy match. Fujii thinks that since Ippo is moving to the world, there will be a lot of activity in his weight class, with Sendō and Miyata being top ten world rankers, Mashiba, who is wanting a world title match possibly moving to the next level, and how the JBC featherweight title is now open for boxers like the genius, Itagaki to take.

Foreboding Clouds[]

Kumi checking on Ippo's face

Kumi checking on Ippo's face.

At the Makunouchi Fishing Boat, Ippo, while working with Itagaki, informs the customers who call him "champ" that he is not the Japanese champion anymore since he relinquished the belt. Itagaki tells them that he will be itagaking the belt soon, and Ippo will be heading for the world. The customers are excited for the new world champion, but Ippo tells them that to not get carried away. Miyazaki tells Hiroko that Ippo will go from being the best in Japan to being the best in the world. Hiroko knows that Ippo is doing his best, but notes that she hasn't seen any of his matches. The customers ask if she would go to his world title match, as they plan on going if he gets there. Hiroko, however, doesn't care, only caring that he stays healthy. Ippo delivers fresh fish to Kumi. As Ippo was about to leave, Kumi mentions that her cooking skills are limited, wanting his help. Ippo wants to know her brother's location. After hearing that he isn't home, Ippo offers to teach her some simple dishes. In the kitchen, Ippo, having a lot of yellow bream, informs Kumi that it goes good with with soup or sashimi, or serve it with a bit of kelp broth. He shows her to use the back of the knife to cut the scales off. As she cuts the scales, one of them hits Ipo's face. She apologises and tries to touch Ippo's face as her face drew closer to his before stopping herself. As she cuts the fish, scales continue to fly at Ippo's face and they begin laughing. All of a sudden, Mashiba draws near. Ippo and Kumi wait in the living room for the food to cook. Kumi notices that Ippo's bandage is dirty and begins replacing it. Kumi, seeing Ippo's swollen face, notes how she still worries about him. Ippo tells her the reason boxers like him train so hard is to make it home in one piece. Kumi tells him that she knows he is doing his best, but notes that she still worries about him.

Mashiba telling Ippo that he has gotten weak

Mashiba telling Ippo that he has gotten weak.

As their heart beats loudly, Ippo and Kumi are about to kiss, but then get shocked as Mashiba arrives to tell them that the pot their using is about to boil over. Kumi runs for the pot while Ippo begins climbing a well in fear of Mashiba. Mashiba asks Ippo what he was doing with Kumi. Ippo, terrified, stutters as he tries to explain they were making dinner in the kitchen, however, Mashiba misheard him, thinking he said they were making kids. Ippo claims they were cooking, but Mashiba thinks he is saying they were cooking something up. Kumi throws a spoon at Mashiba, telling him that dinner is ready. As they eat, Mashiba likes the food until Kumi mentions that Ippo helped make it, causing him to spit it out. As everyone finished eating, Mashiba asks Ippo who beat him. Once he learns that it was Sendō, Mashiba reminds Ippo that Sendō is the one he beat twice, wondering why he got beat by him recently. Ippo thinks it is just that Sendō has gotten stronger, thinking that it is a miracle he won before. Mashiba asks Ippo about him saying he trains to make it home in one piece. Ippo explains that his mother is always waiting and worrying at home for him, and while he is somewhat prepared for what happens in the ring, he wants to come back home safely so his mother doesn't worry as much. He adds that even if he comes back bandaged and bruised, he wants to walk home with his own two feet. Mashiba asks him if that is really what someone aiming for the world title should say, but Ippo and Kumi thinks so. Mashiba sees why he got beaten as he tells Ippo that he has become weak, shocking Ippo. As Ippo leaves the house, Kumi scolds Mashiba for ruining their time together. Walking home, Ippo remembers Mashiba calling him weak, planning to train.

Makunouchi's Cocked and Ready[]

Shinoda explaining how impressive Kamogawa's mitt practice skills are

Shinoda explaining how impressive Kamogawa's mitt practice skills are.

At the Kamogawa gym, Ippo does mitt practice with Kamogawa. Kamogawa tells him to take a break, but Ippo claims he doesn't need one. Kamogawa tries to continue the session, but is stopped by Yagi in order to not overdo it. Itagaki tells Aoki how it is rare for someone to knockout someone with a single body blow, as they got to be careful to not get hit by a counter from above or below, noting how they need the power and perfect position to pull it off. Aoki adds that they need to get close enough for their punch to come in at an angle. Itagaki demonstrates on Aoki that the punch has to be thrown upward like they're pushing their opponent's liver inward as if their guts are getting punched out. Kimura, having overheard their conversation, now doesn't feel good since he is going to be his sparring partner since Alfredo is more of an out-boxer type. Shinoda tells the gym members how he is more impressed with Kamogawa, as he is the one who teaches Ippo the step-in, positioning, and punch angles, adding that he does the same with Takamura who has a different build, deeming the coach a master trainer. As Takamura begins doing mitt practice with Kamogawa, Aoki and Itagaki note that Kamogawa is an expert in taking those hard hits as well. Shinoda thinks how, despite his age and different build, Kamogawa is still able to withstand the blows of the two hard punchers of their gym while showing no signs of exhaustion even though his body should feel it, knowing that he himself could never do it.

Itagaki finding out that Imai is his opponent for the JBC title

Itagaki finding out that Imai is his opponent for the JBC title.

Kimura asks Itagaki why he isn't the one sparring with Ippo since they both have matches on the same day. Itagaki answers that he isn't allowed to even though he wants to. Aoki tells Itagaki that he will be sparring with him since Itagaki's opponent for the vacant JBC featherweight title is an in-fighter. Aoki and Kimura are shocked that Itagaki didn't know who his opponent is nor what type he is, but Itagaki figures he is just better off boxing like he normally does and it should get him by. Ippo looks at the latest Monthly Boxing Fan issue to see who Itagaki is fighting and is shocked to see that, with Itagaki as the first ranker, he will be fighting the second ranker, Imai. Itagaki looks at the magazine and becomes confident that he will win. Aoki and Kimura reminds him that Imai gave him a lot of trouble last time, barely winning a split decision. Itagaki explains that he has grown a lot since that match, and thinks that it will be a great chance to show the difference between them. Aoki and Kimura think that Itagaki is too confident. Takamura thinks that Ippo going for the world title and Itagaki going for the JBC title just sounds weird to him. Takamura complains that he wants to conquer his third weight class, the super middleweight, but Yagi explains that it is one of the most competitive weight classes and there are talks about an unification match, so it is hard to negotiate with any of those champions. Takamura reads the headline talking about the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF champions and claims that they are just cannon fodder, wanting to just beat them already. Aoki and Kimura think that Takamura is even more confident that Itagaki.

Ippo telling Aoki and Kimura how Alfredo is strong after seeing videos of him

Ippo telling Aoki and Kimura how Alfredo is strong after seeing videos of him.

At his home, Takamura looks at the latest Monthly Boxing Fan issue while thinking how there is no way Ippo being a world champion will happen. But then he remembers how he beat Volg, who is now world champion, and he has a good record. He doesn't think that Ippo's punches will land in the world level, wondering what kind of fight Kamogawa will put Ippo in. He then notices something on the cover of the magazine that makes him realise he can do it and begins running toward the gym. At the Kamogawa gym, Aoki and Kimura notices that Ippo's face is no longer swollen, so he can spar now. Ippo is worried that he isn't going to get enough sparring done to face the second ranker in the world. Ippo tells them how he has watched videos of Alfredo's matches and noticed that everyone he fought had trouble avoiding his left, which is a common problems boxers have when fighting Mexican boxers due to their left extend far and use them in many ways. Ippo notes that Alfredo is strong, and his plan on fighting him is just to find an answer on how well he can do against the strongest boxers in the world and if he is strong enough to face them. Aoki and Kimura ask if he is seriously going to face Alfredo and then Ricardo without a plan, but Ippo believes he is better off just honing his usual style, which Aoki and Kimura think Ippo is being too casual like Itagaki, making them wonder if he can even win. Takamura appears and reveals that Ippo can.

Aoki, Kimura, and Takamura joking about a headline about Ippo

Aoki, Kimura, and Takamura joking the headline that claims Ippo is cocked and ready.

He adds that Ippo can also become world champion, and even dominate weight classes above featherweight and get all eleven belts. Takamura shows the latest Monthly Boxing Fan issue to Aoki and Kimura where it says "MAKUNOUCHI'S COCKED, READY FOR BATTLE". The trio then jokes and dances about the phrase, irritating Ippo to the point of trying to ignore them and failing, making him feel like his fists are powerless. Ippo and Itagaki notices someone outside the window, and when Itagaki opens it, it turns out to be Itagaki's father, who just got laid off of work again. The father claims to have been wandering around and noticed that everyone is having fun at the gym and eavesdropped. He claims that Ippo will soon be drawing his holy sword from the stone, motioning himself removing the sword from the stone and yelling "Excalibur". While Ippo, Aoki, and Kimura didn't get the joke Takamura got it and Itagaki explains how it can mean the male genitalia, causing Ippo to run away from the gym.

The Man Who Knows Ricardo Martínez[]

Martinez talking to Alfredo

Alfredo calling Ricardo.

At the Kawahara gym, Miyata and his father watch videos of Alfredo's matches, and Miyata thinks that Alfredo will be extremely tough to beat. Later, Ippo watches videos Alfredo's matches and is amazed of how he uses his lefts, which reminds him of someone else. While Ippo does roadwork with Itagaki, he asks him about Imai. Itagaki claims he watched two or three of his matches where he got hit a lot and seems more aggressive and reckless compared to his amateur boxing days where he was more known for his defence and being able to beat his opponents before he got hit. Itagaki notes how Imai is going for more dual exchanges and coming out on top, explaining how in his latest match, Imai and his opponent kept trading rights. When Itagaki thinks that if it was him, he would throw feints and make him miss a right then hit him, he notices Ippo smiling. Ippo claims that it is good he is keeping a close watch, as Imai is a tough opponent and there is no need to be embarrassed because he is studying on him. Itagaki asks about how his studying on Alfredo is going. Ippo answers how he watches Alfredo's videos every morning and night, which Itagaki thinks that it would be bad for him to do it before bed since his opponent might appear in his dreams. Ippo thinks that it is good when that happens since he can run many simulations on them and not take any real damage, as well as being able to continue fighting no matter how many times he goes down, however, Itagaki doesn't want to see Imai in his dreams. Itagaki asks what he sees when he dreams of fighting Alfredo. Ippo claims that he always sees himself losing by knockout or decision. Ippo adds that the ways he uses his left jabs and uppercuts is very similar to Ricardo. Elsewhere, Alfredo calls Ricardo and asks for a second rematch if he can beat Ippo, however, Ricardo doesn't recall who Ippo is. Alfredo explains that he heard that Ricardo sparred against him before his match with Date, but Ricardo can't recall every boxer he sparred with. Alfredo claims that he will just get ranked first and request the title match then. Bill tells Ricardo that Alfredo is a good boxer who has always looked up to him and has gotten stronger learning from him. Bill reminds Ricardo that the boxer Alfredo was talking about was the Japanese champion with the Peek-a-Boo Style. Ricardo remembers him as the boy with the Dempsey Roll, wishing that he had remembered before and warned Alfredo to be careful.

Ippo's training with the extending boxing glove tool

Ippo's training with the extending boxing glove tool.

At the Kamogawa gym, while Ippo is training on his ducking and weaving while Takamura, Aoki, Kimura, and Itagaki are watching. Aoki comments on how he steps in while doing so making it seem like he is twice as fast, and Itagaki notes how the pressure when Ippo coming towards his opponent while dodging his punches makes him seem faster. During a break, Ippo tells Kamogawa how he is practising dodging Alfredo's lefts as they are particularly dangerous so he needs to make sure his weaving is sharp or he will never get close to him. Kamogawa agrees, and explains how many Mexicans have lefts that extend far and hit hard, and there are no build up in the shoulders or elbows, so it seems like their fists fly out from their ready position. He further explains that even if the left isn't fast, the angle is so sharp that the transition would still be hard to see, making it seem like the glove got bigger all of a sudden, and the hooks and uppercuts can also be used in that same position to switch between long and close range attacks, making it hard to predict. Kamogawa shows a tool to help Ippo train to go against those left: a boxing glove on a stick that extends and bends when used in a throwing motion. Kamogawa begins training Ippo with it, and Ippo tries to dodge and block the boxing glove that keeps changing angles while getting hit a few times. While watching, Kimura notes how despite dealing with the Flicker Jab and Hien, he can barely cope with the training, and Takamura comments how it isn't a speciality left, but a extremely high level form of a basic left.

Alfredo talking to Lisa

Alfredo talking to Lisa about Ricardo.

In Mexico, Alfredo catches a boy who stole a bag, telling him that they will apologise together. Later, Alfredo tells Lisa], that he used to be just like that boy, stealing and resorting to violence when he had a disagreement with someone as if it was a natural response. Alfredo tells her how he remembers going to the Arena México when Ricardo invited poor children to watch his matches, having them sit close enough to see, but far enough to not get scared. While Lisa thinks Ricardo is a kind and respectable champion, Alfredo doesn't, as he only felt like Ricardo was an egoistical rich person who had it all and just invited them to show off and look down on them. However, Alfredo remembers how after he saw Ricardo defeat a strong challenger he faced head on, it was inspirational, leaving Alfredo on his feet with his hands up, and was amazed when Ricardo told everyone after the match that he wants the boys of the nation to not forget what machismo is. Alfredo understood instantly that Ricardo didn't get to the top of the world just because of his natural talent, but by climbing up with hard work and courage. Alfredo tells Lisa how Ricardo's words struck him as something an Aztec god would say, and that ever since that day, he has been his idol and goal, with the only way to reach him is inside the ring. He remembers telling himself that if he kept winning, one day he will meet him in the ring, and while he did, the first time it wasn't even a fight since he was riddled with nerves, then the second time was worse, as he got stronger and forced Ricardo to fight him seriously, causing him to wake up in a hospital bed after the match. Lisa thinks that Alfredo shouldn't obsess over the WBA title, as he can become champion in a different federation, but Alfredo doesn't want to avoid Ricardo, as he has to face the strongest in the would since that what machismo means to him. Alfredo notes how Ricardo is undefeated despite the insane number of title defences, which he has come to appreciate since becoming a boxer, and that is why he wants to take the manly path and be brave like a man should while knowing he is risking his life. While he doesn't know if his next opponent is strong, he knows that he is the only one who can surpass Ricardo. He tells Lisa that he will be heading to Japan soon to fight Ippo with machismo in his heart.

The Other Man Who Knows Ricardo Martínez[]

Ippo getting past Kamogawa's extended lefts

Ippo getting past Kamogawa's extended lefts.

Later, at the Kamogawa gym, Ippo is getting used to the training with the extending boxing glove, being able pass through Kamogawa's throws and close in with a liver blow to Kamogawa's protected body. As they watch, Aoki and Kimura notes how the body blows from Ippo's lowered position come out fast and strong enough to put someone down, and Itagaki believes when it comes down to fighting at that range, he bets he is the best in the world. When Ippo and Kamogawa says his training isn't done yet, Aoki thinks that fighting against the second ranked in the world would make anyone nervous, Takamura claims that they want to clear any doubts since when Ippo sparred against Ricardo, he was beaten with only Ricardo's left, and Alfredo uses his left just like Ricardo. Aoki thinks that Ippo got used to it fast and probably trains at home, and Kimura claims that Ippo is probably the world champion in terms of training. Itagaki adds that he sees him doing squats on the shaky boat and ducking iron bars at night, thinking that after all he has done, he doubts he will lose.

Mari interviewing Date on Ippo's match against Alfredo

Mari interviewing Date on Ippo's match against Alfredo.

At the Monthly Boxing Fan, Mari interviews coach Date, asking him what he thinks of Alfredo, and if he notices the similarities to Ricardo, especially his left. Date answers that Alfredo is not just a knockoff, as he has the goods. Date tells Mari about how Okita, who looked up to him, copied his form and habits and trained hard to catch up to him, even acquiring the same technique as him, and while there is nothing wrong with resembling someone's style, they need something more than that to attain real mastery. He explains that when someone is simply copying another boxer, they are trying to just be as good as the original when they should be trying to get better, which requires the desire and ambition to get to the next level, and the spirit to move on, the hunger, and the strength of will to catch up and surpass their goal. He notes with that hunger, it doesn't matter if they are able to copy the original, what is important is the fruit of that motivation, the effort they put in, and the growth of the results, and eventually they will become a boxer that is as good or even better. Ricardo claims he doesn't know if Alfredo started out looking up to Ricardo, wanting to beat him, or both, but it is obvious that the resemblance was born from wanting to surpass him, with fists hardened with a desire to win. He adds that Alfredo might seem like a stylish boxer like Ricardo and probably acts like a gentleman, but Date feels like he is scary, noting his vicious look in his eyes at all times, comparing him to be like Miyata with Sendō's wild side. Mari asks if Date thinks Ippo will win. Date answers that it is 60-40 with Ippo at 60%, explaining that Ippo's boxing seems a bit too simple for the world stage, and there is a good chance he will lose by decision, but if he can close the distance, it will increase his chances. He adds that he will be fine if he has gotten stronger, but wonders what will happen if he got weaker. Mari doesn't think Ippo with the training he does has gotten weaker, but notes the chances of him overworking himself. Date thinks that how Ippo spends his time until the match comes is key, and it all comes down to what his approach will be.

Their Final Preparations[]

Aoki and Kimura discussing how Ippo's punching angle have changed back

Aoki and Kimura discussing how Ippo's punching angle have changed back.

After Ippo trains by ducking under iron bars, hitting a tire with a hammer, and sparring against Kimura, Kamogawa proclaims that all that is left is the final touches, instructing him to rest and not mess up down the final stretch. Later, after another sparring session where Kimura gets hit by another liver blow, Kimura goes to the gym's washroom, where he is approached by Aoki. Kimura tells Aoki how if one throws a normal light jab, it won't stop Ippo, but if one throws a large swing, Ippo can slide past and close in, punching their gut until their sick. Aoki notes that since Ippo doesn't have to do much weight control, he hits at full power. Kimura notices how Ippo's punching angles have changed back to what they were before he learned the Dempsey Roll. He remembers how Ippo, after learning the Dempsey Roll, threw more hooks to match the horizontal weaving, where as before, he threw more punches from down below as originally taught by Kamogawa, which was more like a compact body blow in the form of an uppercut. Kimura also remembers how if someone tried to cover their body, Ippo would change direction and come at their face, then he would go back to the body once they start guarding their face, and keep closing in. Aoki wonders what made Ippo's punches change back. Kimura thinks that Ippo may have felt bad that his match against Kojima ended up being like a brawl and felt the need to go work on his fundamentals. Aoki thinks that Ippo going back to the basics in the world stage and doing what Kamogawa taught him sounds like what Ippo would do. Aoki tells Kimura about his sparring sessions with Itagaki, pointing out how his face looks like it never got hit. Aoki claims that he was unable to land any hits on Itagaki, and while Itagaki is weak because of weight control, he has an extremely strong defence, flexible, and can see almost everything. Aoki thinks that Ippo and Itagaki just keep getting stronger, and unless they magically weaken before their matches, they will win and head to the next level where Kimura and him can't reach them.

Alfredo arriving in Japan

Alfredo arriving to Japan.

Ippo asks Itagaki about his condition, which Itagaki answers that he is doing okay. Ippo thinks that he has done all that he needed to do, and all that is left is to find out how long he can fight and how well he will fight against Alfredo, planning to put himself to the test. At the Narita Terminal 1, the Monthly Boxing Fan reporters watch as Alfredo and his staff arrive to Japan. The reporters notice Alfredo is in his training suit, planning to go straight to the local gyms to practise before heading to his hotel. Fujii thinks how Alfredo is already in battle mode, and depending on his match against Ippo, the landscape of the Japanese featherweight class may change a lot.

Alfredo's desire to have his right explode

Alfredo's desire to have his right explode.

Alfredo stops by the Otowa gym, and, while sparring against a high ranked Japanese lightweight boxer, who can't get close, onlookers notices how Alfredo's left is flawless, and his footwork is even better. Fujii observes how Alfredo is able to keep his personal distance by constantly using very tiny movements. The Otowa coach thinks Alfredo is real trouble, as boxers who have their basics down tight are particularly tough, and, after seeing Alfredo bowing and thanking his sparring partner, the coach sees that he is gentleman-like as well. Imai doesn't think he is a gentleman, however, since he is sure Alfredo doesn't want to exhaust himself too much because he is sparring, but he would be angry if someone was holding back that much against him, as he only used his left. Imai wished to see his right, and if he didn't have a fight coming up, he would spar against Alfredo as he thinks he would make him serious. Alfredo notices Imai glaring at him. As the Otowa coach notices Imai's desire to fight Alfredo, he stops him and reminds him that he is fighting Itagaki and to let Ippo take care of Alfredo. Imai leaves, claiming that without a doubt he will take the JBC title. At a hotel, Alfredo's coach notices that Alfredo isn't sleeping. Alfredo tells his coach that while Japan is a nice country, he needs more, as his sparring partners were so weak, wanting to land something destructive with his right. His coach tells him to save up all his stress and power and let his right explode when his match starts.

Alfredo using Ricardo's words

"I wouldn't expect too much from him."

The next day, the weigh-in for the matches arrive. At the Kōrakuen Hall, Ippo and Itagaki tells Kamogawa that their weight is good. Kamogawa advises them to keep a close eye on their opponents to confirm their condition and spirit, as the fight has already begun. Inside, after Itagaki and Imai passes their weight check, Itagaki notices that Imai is more intense than usual. Imai walks up to Ippo, warning him to be careful. After Ippo and Alfredo meet eyes for the first time and pass their weight check, the reporters ask Ippo how it feels to relinquish the JBC featherweight belt after so long and what his thoughts are on his upcoming match that could become the preliminary match for a shot at the world title. Ippo feels as if he is just now realising he isn't the Japanese champion anymore, and he views the match as him being a challenger and wants to use his training and experience to see how effectively he can fight at the world level. As Ippo was about to explain his training and game plan, he is knocked on the head by Kamogawa for almost showing his plans to his opponent. He explains he trained hard and hopes to see what he worked on his effective in the world level. As the reporters begin to ask Alfredo questions, Mari goes to Ippo to translate his Spanish. Alfredo is asked his impression on Ippo. Alfredo tells them what he thinks Ricardo would say: "I wouldn't expect too much from him." The shocked reporters thinks it would be odd to not expect anything from him, however, Alfredo comments how Ippo seems incredibly small to him, and once the gong rings, they will see what he means. As the reporters think that the comment got Ippo fired up, Ippo declines and tells the reporters again that he just wants to see what he worked on his effective in the world level.

Mashiba and Sendō deciding to watch Ippo's match against Alfredo

Mashiba and Sendō deciding to watch Ippo's match against Alfredo.

As Mari remembers Date wondering what would happen if Ippo has gotten weaker, she knows that Ippo means it when he talks about how hard he has trained, and probably has trained more than ever before, as well as having reliable people supporting him with a good plan on what to do. She doesn't think Ippo has gotten weaker, but doesn't know why she is so nervous. With Sendō, remembering Takamura claiming that Ippo has gotten weaker, and Mashiba, remembering Ippo saying he wants to walk home with his own two feet, the two rivals of Ippo decide that they will have to go and watch the match tomorrow.

Go to the World! - Semi-Final - JBC Featherweight Title Match (Vacant) - Manabu Itagaki (JBC Rank 1) VS. Kyōsuke Imai (JBC Rank 2)[]

Fujii remembering Ippo's boxing history

Fujii remembering Ippo's boxing history.

On the day of the matches, at the Makunouchi Fishing Boat, Hiroko notices Ippo is going to wear his blue coloured boxing trunks. Ippo thinks how he will be the challenger starting today. He tells Hiroko if he wins the match with Alfredo he might be fighting for the world title, asking her if she would come and watch his world title match. Hiroko claims that she will think about it. At the Monthly Boxing Fan, after Mari and Fujii's assistant leave, Fujii remembers how he first met Ippo when he went to the Kamogawa gym to interview Miyata before his pro debut and saw Miyata lose in a spar against the newcomer Ippo. He remembered Ippo showing great potential after becoming pro by winning the Rookie King Tournament and Class A Tournament. He saw that Ippo's road to victory was a dangerous one, as his fighting style would lead him to getting knocked down multiple times and receive a lot of beatings, but he would keep rising up to pull off miraculous come-back victories. He believes that Ippo's greatest weapon and what helped him capture the heart of the nation was his ambidextrous destructive power, dashing speed, and courage to press forward without fear, and by the time he became the JBC champion, he was one of the main attractions in the Japanese boxing world. Fujii believes that Ippo's match against Alfredo may lead to the world title challenge, and that Alfredo's chilling words that everyone should not expect too much from Ippo is the opposite from the reality, as people are hoping that Ippo overcomes this hurdle and go on to true glory in the world stage, as Ippo's fists may already carry the hopes of the nation. He also believes that Mashiba, Miyata, and Sendō seem to be outgrowing in the pacific region, and a new generation of stars in Itagaki and Imai are ready to take the spotlight. Fujii believes that regardless of the outcome, the landscape of the featherweight class will radically change.

The Makunouchi Generation arrive to watch Ippo's match against Alfredo

The Makunouchi Generation arrive to watch Ippo's match against Alfredo.

Outside the Kōrakuen Hall, Mari and Fujii's assistant see Mashiba and Sendō waiting outside. Mashiba tells the reporters how he doesn't care about the main event, only wanting to see the JBC featherweight title match. Mari thinks that Mashiba, part of the Makunouchi Generation, wants to see how the main event plays out. Mashiba and Sendō gets irritated at hearing them being called part of the Makunouchi Generation, but Sendō thinks it can' be helped since him and Mashiba both lost to him. When Sendō reveals to the reporters how he defeated Ippo in a spar recently, Mashiba comments how Ippo has gotten weaker. As Mashiba walks away, Sendō asks where his sister is, as he has a crush on her, but Mashiba gets irritated and yells out something about Ippo and Kumi before stopping, making Sendō confused. Mari asks Mashiba and Sendō if they think Ippo has gotten weaker or stronger now, but the duo claims that that is why they came to find out as they walk inside the venue. Nearby, Miyata gets ready to walk inside. Inside, Ippo asks some people what match is currently going on, and, when they claim it is on the fourth one, Ippo thanks then and leaves. The people believe that Ippo is more normal than usual today, wondering if he will be okay against someone as strong as Alfredo.

Itagaki and Imai II - Corner

Itagaki and Imai in the ring for their rematch.

Ippo goes to where Itagaki is and sees him doing a quick mitt practice session with Shinoda. Aoki and Kimura notes how Itagaki isn't nervous for his first title match. Itagaki tells Ippo how he hasn't forgotten the baton pass he got from him. Ippo goes to the Kamogawa gym's venue room, and Aoki and Kimura goes to the audience area to watch Itagaki's match. As the JBC featherweight title match is about to begin, Itagaki runs to the ring and does the Itagaki Shuffle while waiting. Imai then slowly walks to the ring and stays still while waiting. In the audience area, Sendō hears Itagaki and Imai's information from the announcer, seeing that Itagaki has been on top since becoming pro. Mashiba claims that Itagaki will win this time too, as he even can give him trouble, and he has gotten sharper after beating Saeki and Karasawa. Mari tells them to not underestimate Imai, as he only lost the East Japan Rookie King Tournament match against Itagaki by a narrow decision and scored downs on Itagaki. Mashiba and Sendō wonder what will happen now. The announcer announces the guest commentators being Date and Takamura. Fujii goes to Miyata and asks him how Imai was when he sparred against him. Miyata claims that Imai has his strengths, but Itagaki has grown amazingly as well, so his prediction is that it will come down to how much the difference between them has changed. As the match is about to begin, Shinoda advises Itagaki to concentrate as hard as he can and keep moving as his style is based on focus. Itagaki thinks that this time, he will send him to the hospital like he did when he fought him before. Imai is instructed by his coach to keep his guard up and get used to Itagaki's speed. Imai thinks how Itagaki's recent matches made it seem like he got superpowers and not fighting with boxing techniques, and since he is the one who unleashed Itagaki's potential, he will be the one to stop him.

Imai vs Itagaki II - 001

Itagaki down in thirteen seconds.

As soon as the first round begins, Imai rushes toward Itagaki as the latter is already focused, but still at the corner. Imai knows how slow he is to Itagaki with his talent unleashed, so he has to trap Itagaki at the corner before he can get warmed up. Imai already knows that Itagaki uses three left hooks to get out of the corner, so he takes the first two left hooks that are used for distractions, and then goes for a dual exchange for the third one. However, Imai's punch lands on Itagaki's Shoulder Block, pushing him to the corner post, which works in Imai's favour as he believes it should slow Itagaki down. Imai predicts that Itagaki will escape to his right, but the few seconds of delay will give him his chance. Imai lands a strong right body blow on Itagaki, followed by a left hook knocking him down in only thirteen seconds of the first round.

Imai vs Itagaki II - 010

Itagaki focusing.

Itagaki is confused as to why he is looking at the mat, while Imai raises his fist as he walks to a neutral corner. Takamura is glad he stopped himself before he announced to the crowd that Itagaki was going to dominate, preventing his embarrassment. Itagaki gets up, thinking everyone is exaggerating, and the match continues. Imai knows that Itagaki is going to be on shaky feet due to his right body blow, and without his legs, Itagaki is a fragile boxer with no punching power. Itagaki sees that his legs are too numb to move, but he thinks that as long as his head is clear, he still has a chance, as he can make do with his upper body and let himself recover after a minute. Itagaki lowers his guard, a move that Date comments as risky, but he is also building up rhythm which may help him relax a bit. As Itagaki focuses every bit of his mind, Imai knows that while Itagaki looks to be taking things lightly, it is a sign his unique offence is about to kick in, noticing how the way he moves every part of his body like a feint, and if he reacts to any of Itagaki's motions the wrong way, he can end up losing sight of him, letting Itagaki fly around without taking a single hit. He notes how Itagaki's high speed movement, relentless feints, and pinpoint positioning lets his time-warp take effect, and is why he is called "Chronos". Watching in his room in the venue, Ippo wonders why Imai is slow to pursue him in his big chance until he remembers that Imai took Itagaki's hooks earlier in the round which might have affected him badly, which means Itagaki has a chance.

Imai vs Itagaki II - 020

Itagaki and Imai have a dual exchange.

As Imai draws closer to Itagaki, the latter sees Imai's path, and even his muscle fibres. Imai throws a barrage of punches that Itagaki swiftly dodges with just his upper body moving, as well as countering one of Imai's punches. As he is still in the corner, Itagaki starts his plan of getting out by throwing left hooks. After hitting Imai with two left hooks, Imai pushes Itagaki into the corner post with his head to his chest, thinking how Itagaki's punches are like razor blades: a single hit can sever one's consciousness, but only for a moment, as it is not the kind of damage that digs deep and keeps hurting, so with a bit of fortitude, he can withstand it, deeming Itagaki's punches weak. Imai clenches his teeth as he is hit by a third left hook, which doesn't get off Itagaki. Itagaki sees that Imai can take hits to the temple, so he tries the jaw, lifting Imai's head with his gloves and throws a left uppercut. A dual exchange happens as Itagaki's left uppercut and Imai's liver blow lands at the same time. Imai's jaw is sent skyward, Itagaki doubles over in pain, and both boxers' mouthpiece goes flying. Imai thinks back on how ever since he was defeated by Itagaki, he has been preparing for this moment by grinding his head onto the corner post and punching it. He knew that with Itagaki's speed, he could not counter him, so he could only hope for a dual exchange. He recalls his first body blow disabled Itagaki legs and speed, while Itagaki's feinting to fake Imai out failed since he pressed into him, so he didn't need to look at him, and since Itagaki was pinned to the corner, he couldn't move around, thrilled to have broken all three of his superpowers that let him hide in another world. He thinks how Itagaki is always used to travelling to another world with his incredible focus, where weaker boxers are helpless due to not being able to chase after him, which is why Itagaki's matches look uneven. Imai knows Itagaki's head is clear while his body is paralysed, so he will appear slow still, but Itagaki won't be able to react to his punches, so he plans on making Itagaki see pure hell.

Imai vs Itagaki II - 029

Imai's knockout blow on Itagaki.

Despite the danger, Itagaki keeps his guard low, which causes Takamura to yell out for him to get out of the corner and use his legs to move around, as he can't punch worth anything, and comments how he isn't "Chronos" since he is so slow. While Kimura is annoyed by Takamura's comments, Aoki thinks that Itagaki must have a good reason to lower his guard. Imai knows that Itagaki's lowered guard is a trap, as most boxers will go after him and all that will be waiting for them is a counter. Itagaki sees Imai in slow motion, as well as each twitch in his eyes, and every muscle he tenses. As Imai goes for a body blow, Itagaki counters with a left uppercut. Imai's raised head goes back down and onto Itagaki's chest, pushing him into the corner post again. Imai launches a series of body blows on Itagaki, who tries to clinch, but Imai pushes his hands off him, hitting Itagaki with more body blows. Imai knows he is experiencing his pain in slow motion, watching himself beaten slowly, unable to do anything, and thinks how everyone envies Itagaki for his speedy reflexes and sharp eyesight, but he bets Itagaki wishes he never had them. Itagaki tries to withstand the hits, not wanting Imai to underestimate the training he does at the Kamogawa gym, where he was helped building his midsection. Imai knows from last time how tough Itagaki is mentally, so he needs to knock him unconscious as his spirit won't break. Imai's barrage begins to slow down, which Date observes that he is running out of steam due to his reckless plan that took a lot of stamina and focus, which wore away as Itagaki hung on. Imai gathers all the spirit he has in order to continue the body blow barrage again. Itagaki and Imai are unable to handle it anymore, leading Itagaki to block a body blow. Imai realises that Itagaki's face is now open, sending out a right overhand. As planned, Itagaki goes for a counter, thinking how he is the speed king of Japanese boxing. However, Itagaki sees his own punch, which looks slow to him, realising he is about to get hit. Imai's right overhand lands on Itagaki's face, making him slide down on the corner post, sitting down on the mat. The referee immediately stops the match, resulting in Imai becoming the new JBC featherweight champion by a one round knockout.

Imai vs Itagaki II - End

Imai wearing his new JBC featherweight champion belt.

In the ring, Imai wears his new JBC featherweight champion belt. Everyone notices Imai's face is swollen, noting how the fast knockout was not an easy one. Imai looks at Itagaki and acknowledges how strong he was, as he had noticed it during his amateur days that he has more natural talent and has become more incredible since then, thinking that if he did not stop him now, he doesn't think he could ever beat him again. Itagaki gets up and bumps fists with Imai, congratulating him. Fujii notes that while it didn't last a minute, it was still intense, which Miyata agrees. Sendō tells Mashiba that his prediction sucked, while Mashiba notes how the new champion in his weight class looks tough, however, Sendō doesn't care, only wanting to see the boxer in the next match. As Itagaki walks away from the ring, he apologises to Shinoda, and begins crying as he is sorry for dropping Ippo's baton pass.

In the Kamogawa gym's room in the venue, Kamogawa, Yagi, and Shinoda enter and informs the worried Ippo that Itagaki was taken straight to the doctor, and that he is conscious with Aoki and Kimura there with him. Shinoda and Yagi leave after Shinoda notes that there is nothing they can do about it now, but he will focus on being in his corner so he should focus on his match. As Ippo focuses on his upcoming match, Kamogawa tells him to not panic if he gets hit, instead, think of it as a natural consequence of facing the second best in the world, and warns him to not get too emotional, as he may end up taking about counter like in his match against Kojima. Kamogawa advises him to try and stay calm, steady, and focus on dodging his left as practised, and once he is able to dodge, start closing in and increase the pressure. After headbutting Ippo, Kamogawa tells him that if he wins this, the world is next. Ippo replies that he will do his best to use everything he taught him and it is time to find out whether or not he can do it. In Alfredo's room in the venue, Alfredo tells his coach that he was able to focus, and that there was nothing to distract him despite being in enemy territory, deeming the people in Japan too soft, including Ippo, vowing to not let him reach Ricardo. As Ippo and his second exit their room, Kamogawa points out Ippo wearing blue trunks with no belt weighing him down, deeming his a pure challenger.

Alfredo entering the ring for his match against Ippo

As the match between Ippo and Alfredo is about to begin, the announcers make their prediction. Takamura believes Ippo is screwed. Date gives a more detailed prediction: he believes that Ippo's focus should be on Alfredo's left, since Ricardo has a very similar left, so Ippo's ability to cope with Alfredo's lefts will say a lot about his future. An argument between Takamura and Date starts when Takamura claims that Date would know best since he is known as the only person in Japan to lose to Ricardo's lefts, wanting him to tell everyone if Ricardo's punches hurt. Ippo makes his way to the ring, shadowboxing as the audience around him stands. As Alfredo walks to the ring as well, Miyata is shocked, as he can tell right away that he is strong.

Ippo and Alfredo in the ring

Ippo and Alfredo at the centre of the ring.

With both boxers in the ring, Mashiba notices that the announcer claims that Alfredo is known as "Mextli," wondering what it means. Mari describes "Mextli" as a god of war and bringer of storms, and a patron of the Aztecs, which can make him the "Mexican Grim Reaper." Ippo, Sendō, and Mashiba notices by just looking at Alfredo that he is strong. As Ippo and Alfredo are at the centre of the ring, the audience notes how Ippo's record is better than Alfredo's, but Ippo hasn't fought anyone outside of the pacific before, and Alfredo has fought many world rankers and defeated them all, believing that if it wasn't for his matches against Ricardo, Alfredo would be world champion. They think that if Ippo can land hits on Alfredo, he will go down, as he is still human. In Ippo's corner, Ippo knows that he can't make the same mistake he made when he went against Kojima, wanting to use the first round to work on being able to dodge Alfredo's left. On the other side, Alfredo is advised by his coach to stay in control.

Ippo begins moving towards Alfredo

Ippo begins moving towards Alfredo.

The match begins, and, after Ippo and Alfredo touch gloves, Alfredo notices Ippo has taken the Peek-a-Boo Style, assuming that Ippo wants to close in if he throws any careless shots, while Ippo sees Alfredo's stance: a high guard with both hands away from his chest, a stance that Ippo sees no openings in. Dates observes Ippo and Alfredo's quiet start, telling the audience how it is a better idea for Ippo to observe his opponent than to rush in, as, if Alfredo fights like Ricardo, then he is observing as well, and going on the offence will just have him figure out Ippo's arsenal. Mari asks Sendō, who has experience fighting Mexicans, what his thoughts on Ippo fighting a Mexican for the first time. Sendō notes how whether it is a straight or a hook, they have great range with their left, and the first time fighting a Mexican isn't easy. Alfredo sends out a left jab, which grazes Ippo's head. Ippo is shocked by how far the left was sent out, and how it quickly it retracted despite the long distance, believing it to be similar to Sawamura's left. Ippo knows that if he waits until he sees the left coming, he won't be able to close in, so he plans to weave his head while going towards Alfredo slowly. As Ippo starts to approach Alfredo, he blocks a left jab after thinking that he shouldn't be able to hit him from that far as he didn't before. Ippo notices that when Alfredo is about to throw a left, he steps in and out a lot to prevent him from knowing when to dive in. Kamogawa sees that Alfredo is already getting a complicated strategy out, messing with Ippo's sense of range. Yagi notes how Ippo has to keep in mind Alfredo's left and his footwork, making it a rough start. Kamogawa knows Ippo isn't good at complex tactics, but he is prepared to cope with them. Ippo realises after watching Volg's world title match that the world stage isn't about fighting hard, it is a place for high level exchanges of technical skill, but since he isn't capable of that, he wonders what he can do. He decides what he can do is steadily push forward and keep weaving his head, acting like Alfredo can hit him from anywhere. Ippo remembers fighting against Sawamura and Gedo's lefts, and how he had to press forward. Ippo suddenly dashes towards Alfredo.

Ippo and Alfredo exchanging blows

Ippo and Alfredo exchanging blows.

Alfredo sees Ippo approaching while weaving his head, and decides that he needs to just throw more punches since Ippo's weaving makes it hard to aim. As he hits Ippo with indirect hits, Alfredo is surprised as he realises that unless he hits Ippo directly, he will close in step-by-step. Mashiba comments how even though Alfredo's punches to Ippo's guard slows him down, Ippo is still dangerously and steadily approaching him, and he will be inside once Alfredo misses a punch. Ippo gets close enough to duck to the side after Alfredo misses a left jab and gets inside his range to attack. Ippo launches a liver blow from below, however, Alfredo knocks Ippo's fist down and throws a left straight that Ippo dodges in time. A short range exchange begins, with Ippo dodging a left jab to the side and throws another liver blow that Alfredo also knocks down again. Ippo leans to the right and throws a right uppercut as Alfredo throws a left straight, with both boxers missing. After Ippo blocks a left jab, he was about to throw another liver blow as Alfredo was about to throw another left jab, but both boxers step back away from each other and pauses. Fujii and Miyata are surprised that the liver blow and right uppercut were stopped by Alfredo, thinking how it is something that can't be done without preparation. Fujii saw it as an exchange of blows filled with courage, caution, and foresight. Ippo thinks Alfredo was impressive when he got close to him and feels accomplished that he was able to get close to him, seeing that his usual fighting style seems to be working. Alfredo notes how Ippo's lowered stance and short height makes his punches come from an upward angle, making him a unique boxer. The announcer asks Date if the observation period is over. Date believes that was the first part, since Ippo is back outside his range and stopped punching, believing it was Ippo showing a demonstration. He adds how both fighters showed their weapons to see how their opponent will react, like a exhibition and staging ground to see what will be effective, as that is how strategy works on the world level. Ippo dashes forward, ducks under Alfredo's left jab and aims a left uppercut at Alfredo's head. Alfredo blocks and becomes off balance as he gets pushed back. As the punch left a print of his fist on his glove, Alfredo deems Ippo's destructive potential as world class, planning to demonstrate his next.

Alfredo stops Ippo's charge with a left uppercut

Alfredo stops Ippo's charge with a left uppercut.

Ippo weaves his head and goes toward Alfredo once again as the audience starts a "Makunouchi" chant while shaking the arena with their stomping. Having fought in many matches away from home like in Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the USA, he still thinks the crowd is annoying, and it makes him angry seeing Ippo motivated by the audience. Alfredo decides to handle Ippo's charge by using footwork to maintain long distance while using left jabs on his guard. Ippo begins dodging them more successfully, and, when he gets close, he gets hit by Alfredo's left uppercut that he noticed looked like a straight at first but then it changed direction mid-throw. Date tells everyone how the testing phase is still going, as Ippo is using his own body to help him measure up to his opponent by taking hits. Ippo thinks how Alfredo's lefts use the same starting motion, but the angles change mid-way. Thinking of punches that change and twist, Ippo remembers his matches against Mashiba and Sanada. Alfredo notices how Ippo was not surprised after taking the uppercut and braced himself for it, wondering what Ippo will do now. As Ippo rushes towards him again, Alfredo is unimpressed with Ippo having no variety in his fighting style, and knows that he can't handle punches that have change ups. Alfredo lands another left uppercut, and once another left uppercut is thrown, it misses, as Ippo remembers the training he did with Kamogawa. Alfredo steps back, and Ippo chases him again. Alfredo's two left jabs get dodged, but he then lands another left uppercut on the charging Ippo. Ippo charges once again and barely dodges a left uppercut. Ippo ducks under the dodged punch and throws a liver blow, however, Alfredo barely blocks it in time, but he still feels the pain. As Ippo was about to throw a follow up punch, the referee signals an end to the first round. Walking to his corner, Alfredo is sure of it that Ippo is used to punches that change direction and had a plan to deal with them.

Watching the match on television, Itagaki tells Aoki and Kimura that Ippo can do it because he is he type that is destined for the top. At Ippo's corner, Ippo tells Kamogawa that Alfredo's punches may change directions, but that is what he trained him for, and plans to not overthink things and do what his body knows. At Alfredo's corner, Alfredo's coach tells Alfredo to let Ippo think he is gaining ground, and reminds him to not let his bad habits pop up. Alfredo's coach notes that Alfredo has laid plenty of bait and Ippo is eating it all.

Alfredo blocking Ippo's liver blow

Alfredo blocking Ippo's liver blow.

As soon as the second round begins, Ippo sets off towards Alfredo as he thinks how he can't risk ducking once he gets close, since Alfredo hits when an uppercut when he does that, and notices that Alfredo has only been throwing punches that come straight at him and uppercuts, none from the side, so he plans to use compact horizontal sliding with as little motion as possible. As Ippo is getting closer, he uses head slips to dodge jabs and uppercuts. Once inside his range, Ippo throws a liver blow, but Alfredo steps back to dodge. Ippo is glad that all of his boxing experience is proving useful and is able to capitalise on the things Kamogawa taught him, thinking the boxing he taught him works against the best in the world. Miyata tells Fujii how it is strange that Alfredo doesn't seem impressive, believing that Alfredo is hiding something. Fujii agrees, as he noticed that Alfredo is relying too much on his left, predicting that Ippo will soon memorise it and have no problem dodging the uppercuts and straight punches. He then realises that Alfredo is intentionally letting him memorise it. Kamogawa can feel that Alfredo is about to reach deeper in his arsenal. Miyata thinks he is hiding the punch he hasn't used yet: his right. Alfredo blocks another liver blow and steps away when Ippo throws more left hooks. Ippo chases and head slips past Alfredo's lefts to throw another liver blow that gets blocked. Alfredo's right arm that is used to block the liver blows begins to get numb.

Alfredo's first right hitting Ippo

Alfredo's first right hitting Ippo.

As Ippo is starting to get into the rhythm of things, he throws another liver blow that gets blocked and another hook that Alfredo dodges. Ippo plans to get Alfredo to the ropes or the corner to prevent him from constantly escaping. Mashiba questions if this is all the second best in the world can do, but Sendō notes that Ippo is a world ranker too, so it isn't too odd that they are on equal ground. Fujii and Miyata wonder if Alfredo is really having trouble or if he is setting a trap. Alfredo sees another liver blow coming, but suddenly he realises that it was a feint, and he barely dodges an uppercut. Alfredo's back is at the ropes due to stepping back too far. Ippo dashes toward Alfredo and gets ready to dodge a left jab, however, with Ippo's eyes on Alfredo's still extended left, Alfredo throws out a right into where Ippo head slips, hitting Ippo. Miyata thinks how Ippo always leads with his head when he dodges a left, something Alfredo confirmed by throwing multiple lefts, and that Alfredo's left was just a set-up, as his right was his aim, and it was right on target. Everyone becomes shocked when Ippo stands still and knocks his fists together, as the right seemingly had no effect. They the realise that Alfredo's right actually hit Ippo's forehead. Miyata laughs, as he remembers when he sparred against Ippo before they became pro boxers that Ippo did the same thing to him. Miyata tells Fujii that since Ippo knew he couldn't dodge, he grit his teeth, pressed forward, and blocked it with his forehead. Miyata notes that a fist hitting someone's forehead will cause it to hurt and be numb for a while. Ippo feels dizzy, but since it stopped Alfredo, he plans to do it again as many times as it takes. Kamogawa notes that Ippo's neck absorbed the impact, but knows that there is no way he did that unscathed. Kamogawa doesn't think of Ippo as a great strategist, as fighting hard has always been his style, but if he remembers everything he has experienced so far, he hopes for Ippo to land a punch that makes it to the world's best.

Ippo landing his first direct blow on Alfredo

Ippo landing his first direct blow on Alfredo: the liver blow.

Ippo makes his way towards Alfredo again, slipping past his lefts. Alfredo thinks Ippo's tactic makes him seem like a bull, closing in to take a swing, wondering why anyone would use this outdated boxing style. Alfredo plans to use his right again, thinking that it hitting his forehead before was a fluke. Alfredo is surprised when Ippo suddenly sped up in his dash-in, but manages to dodge in time. Alfredo uses a one-two, using the left as bait to land the right, however, the right hits Ippo's forehead once again, surprising Alfredo that he is really doing this on purpose, wondering era he leaned boxing in, as no world ranker fights like this anymore. Ippo dives below and lands a liver blow as Alfredo understands now that he made it this far in the world fighting like this. Alfredo notices Ippo's confident look as if he is saying that he has the advantage at this close range. A close range exchange happens, where, even though Ippo is getting hit more, his body blows are landing on Alfredo. Sendō observes that Alfredo is trying to prove that he is the one who has the advantage at close range, something he respects. Miyata wonders how Alfredo will feel after this exchange, as he explains to Fujii that no matter how many times someone hits Ippo, he keeps fighting back, shrugging off punches that would knockout anyone else. He adds that Ippo's opponents start thinking that their punches are weak and question if they are really affecting him, making them anxious and try punching more at him as the mental pressure slowly builds. After Fujii claims that Ippo can still fall as he isn't invincible, Miyata points out how Ippo doesn't fall, and has built his image of always making come-back victories even though each of his matches seems to be harder hitting than the last. He notes that the last person to down him was Sanada, ten matches ago. Fujii remembers the brutal beating he got from Wally and the terrible punch he got from Kojima without falling and wonders if Ippo has gotten tougher. Miyata doesn't know why he doesn't fall, as damage accumulates over time, people can grow less durable, since getting tougher over time isn't something seen before. As Alfredo and Ippo land another punch on each other, the referee steps between them as the second round ends.

Before walking to his corner, Alfredo knows that Ippo now thinks he is getting somewhere and is confident that he can push the fight into his range. Ippo is glad his punches can hit the second best in the world. At Alfredo's corner, Alfredo tells his coach how Ippo's body blows make his ribs feel like they are creaking and when he blocks them, his right elbow sting so bad he is worried they will go numb. As his coach thinks that Alfredo isn't able to avoid an in-fight, he questions him if he is falling back into his bad habits. Alfredo claims that it is fine since he is calm. Miyata thinks Alfredo is starting to feel the pressure, as Ippo won't stop using the one effective strategy that is simple but deadly, charging the same way through the next rounds. At Ippo's corner, Ippo's seconds try to stop the blood from getting into his eyes. Ippo tells Kamogawa that he now knows how to close in on Alfredo, and once he does that it won't be hard to judge the distance. He states how he is glad he can close in on the second best in the world and his punches are starting to connect, thinking that things are starting to go his way.

Ippo, downed from Alfredo's left hook

Ippo, downed from Alfredo's left hook.

As the third round begins, Ippo enters his Peek-a-Boo Style stance, while Alfredo enters his high stance with fists away from his chest. Alfredo chooses to use out-boxing, using footwork and quick lefts as Ippo charges at him, resulting in jeers from audience that wants them to slug it out. Kamogawa tells Yagi, who thinks Alfredo isn't accommodating them anymore, that Ippo is used to chasing people down, so he is accommodating them more since it is what he is used to, and Ippo is not hesitating. Sendō thinks that Alfredo is lame for his change of style, but Mashiba points out that he tried slugging it out before and just like them, he learned his lesson, remembering how he busted his elbow and Sendō had his ribs broken when fighting Ippo. Fujii thinks that Alfredo's decision is understandable, but Miyata knows that all it is doing is making Ippo fight like he normally does, making it risky, believing that Alfredo won't beat him. Ippo successfully dodges Alfredo's left uppercut and his one-two, surprising Alfredo. Kamogawa thinks how Ippo has been drawing in his past experiences and has found his answer, believing that Ippo has gotten better at strategies without anyone realising it. Date observes that if Ippo is having an easier time closing in and his boxing is effective, then an interesting development is happening. Date predicts that since Alfredo's left is similar to Ricardo's and Ippo is able to easily evade it and close in, then Ippo's forward charge could take him to the top of the world. Date thinks how Ricardo's left is a symbol of his offence that his opponents have come to fear it, but realises that Ippo's charge has caused fear in his opponent's as well. After Alfredo positions and reposition his stance and Ippo misses a left hook, Kamogawa and Yagi notices that Alfredo was trying to do something. Alfredo throws a barrage of lefts. While most missed, he got three of them to land in the end, but Ippo presses forward anyway. Mashiba knows how Alfredo feels, as he and many other of Ippo's opponents has tried to stop his advance and failed. After a strong left hits Ippo's guard and he continues rushing in, Kamogawa believes that Ippo has more momentum going, and that even though Alfredo is trying to pull a cats-paw and goad him into pulling chestnuts out of a fire, Ippo has to reach out into the fire and seize the opportunity. As Ippo has chased Alfredo into a corner, he predicts that Alfredo will throw a one-two, planning to slip in to the right when it comes. Ippo rushes in, however, he is hit by a left hook, sending him down.

Ippo gets up from his down from Alfredo

Ippo gets back up.

The whole arena is shocked from seeing Ippo go down with one hit from the left hook. Kamogawa believes it was all planned out by Alfredo. Fujii is shocked that Ippo got hit by a punch that he normally has no trouble dodging, wondering how Ippo took a telegraphed punch when he was so focused. Miyata reveals to Fujii that his best trait got neutralised. He explains that the scary thing about Ippo is his ability to dodge, as he comes at his opponent at a low angle and then throws his punches, and by dodging and attacking, he builds his rhythm. He adds that Alfredo was aware of how dangerous Ippo's ducking is, so he mixed in uppercuts to make ducking ineffective, throwing big rights to encourage dodging horizontally, and then when Ippo dodged to the right when Alfredo threw a right straight, he did not expect a left hook, since Alfredo never threw one the entire time. Kamogawa is shocked that since the start of the match, it has been one cohesive strategy that was subtle and executed perfectly, as nothing Ippo had was working and they were dancing to Alfredo's tune the entire time. Ippo gains consciousness at the count of six, confused as to why he is down. He struggles to get up until he gets up at the count of nine. As the match continues, Ippo can't move his legs as Alfredo goes toward him. When Kamogawa yells out to go nuts, Ippo swings his fists around, which stops Alfredo's advance until the third round ends.

At Ippo's corner, Ippo asks Kamogawa what he got hit with since he doesn't remember. Ippo is surprised to hear that it was a long left hook, something he didn't even consider seeing since he was only worried about jabs and uppercuts. Ippo thinks how Alfredo doesn't just control his opponent's actions, but he manipulates their thoughts as well. As Ippo starts thinking negatively, Kamogawa reminds him that he can keep up with him, and that while it seems that Alfredo is good at everything, there must be something he is better at than Alfredo. Kamogawa asks Ippo how his legs are. After Ippo claims they have recovered, Kamogawa concludes that Ippo's stamina and ability to recuperate is superior to Alfredo, advising him to chip away at Alfredo's stamina to make him lose willpower by keeping on moving forward and punching. Itagaki tells Aoki and Kimura that this is the first time he has seen Ippo go down since he has entered the gym. At Alfredo's side, Alfredo's coach tells Alfredo that Ippo's punches seemed powerful at the end, predicting that he will have recovered enough to fight back in the next round. He warns Alfredo that he is sure Ippo will show them how he got his world ranking soon, and to expect him to come at him with a plan. Alfredo tells his coach that he will show him what it means when people say world class.

Ippo after five rounds of fighting Alfredo

Ippo after five rounds of fighting Alfredo.

As round four begins, Sendō tells Mari how Ippo's head is all messed up since Mexicans mix up their lefts, since with hooks, they can come in at all angles and switch between big and small swings. As Mari guesses that it will give Alfredo the psychological advantage, Mashiba thinks there are a lot of thoughts going on in Ippo's mind now. Ippo is confused as to what Alfredo will do next and doesn't know what he should do. As the announcer wonders what Alfredo is thinking, Takamura tells him that boxers at the top of the world are bold, but cautious, as they won't get bit by a cornered animal. Takamura points out how Alfredo's eyes look like he is keeping close watch so he can evaluate his opponent's offensive capabilities. Date agrees, and thinks how Alfredo's left is similar to Ricardo's, holding the same significance, and is surprised that Alfredo held back the left hook for so long, doubting that that is all he is holding back, as he could have Ippo focused on the left hook but he may throw a right straight, hook, or uppercut that could end up being a knockout punch. Remembering what he did against Mashiba, Sanada, and Gedo who had changing lefts, he decides to keep moving forward. Alfredo chooses to be cautious, as he knows that Ippo has beaten a lot of people to get here, so he must have something he is counting on to make up the difference between them. Ippo wishes to find out how effective his experience of his previous fights, his training, and everything he has done with Kamogawa will be. From then until there are twenty-two seconds left in the fifth round, Ippo charged forward while getting hit by Alfredo, who hits him from long range with not a scratch on his face, meanwhile, Ippo's face is bruised and his right eye is swollen.

Alfredo's one-sided assault in the fifth round

Alfredo's one-sided assault in the fifth round.

Miyata doesn't think Ippo will be hitting Alfredo with how the things are going now, as he isn't able to anticipate where Alfredo's punches are coming from, so he charges in with no hesitation. However, Miyata notes how Alfredo is capitalising on Ippo's mad dash with punches that have pinpoint precision, perfect in timing and angle, making them have the same effect as counters, and if Alfredo followed through his punches, Ippo would go down. Sendō is angry that Alfredo isn't going for the knockout when he could, thinking that Alfredo is cooling the arena down. Mari points out that Alfredo isn't here to please the crowd, as his only concern is winning and minimising the damage he takes. As Ippo's liver blow hits Alfredo's arm, he get hit with a left hook. Takamura thinks how Ippo's body is tough and believes that Ippo presses forward so much to tire Alfredo out, however, Alfredo is in total control of the pace, and people fighting at their own rhythm won't tire out, concluding that Kamogawa's bet won't pay out. Kamogawa watches in shock as sees Ippo get torn apart, remembering the last beating he took like this was against Wally, where they were saved by Wally's lack of experience, but they can't place their hopes on that as their opponent has been in a world title match before. While Kamogawa notes that their plan was to chip away at Alfredo's stamina, it only led to Ippo taking continuous beatings, wondering what they can do now. Since Alfredo moves back while punching to avoid Ippo's charge, Ippo ducks to the left to avoid a left jab, and throws a Gazelle Punch, but it gets blocked. Alfredo loses balance while blocking, which lets Ippo get close to him, however, Alfredo hits him twice before backing away again. Mashiba observes how Alfredo lands a bunch of hits when a big punch misses, and no matter how tough one is, the damage builds up. While Sendō is annoyed that Alfredo is playing it too safe with not throwing knockout punches, Miyata notes the risks in doing so, thinking he could learn from this. Kamogawa thinks how Ippo has used almost every weapon that he has built over his entire career, but there still doesn't seem to be a way through. Kamogawa is confused as to why he keeps remembering Wally. Ippo continues missing in his charge while getting hit a bunch of times, however, he refuses to give up. When the fifth round ends, the referee gets between the two as Alfredo walks away while Ippo punches air.

Ippo vs Alfredo 14

Ippo and Alfredo's sealed power released for the sixth round.

As they walk to their corner, Ippo can't believe that everything he has tried hasn't been working, while Alfredo wonders if it is enough because he can't hold back much longer. Sendō is angry about what is happening, leading Mashiba to suggest for him to go fight Alfredo after he defeats Ippo. Sendō doesn't want to fight Alfredo as he claims he is only interested in fights that would be satisfying slug fests. Miyata thinks that while the match is educational, he doesn't think he should follow Alfredo's example too closely, since if one doesn't beat their opponent mentally, then they will always hang on the hope of a comeback, which Ippo can pull off. At their corners, Ippo asks for permission to use the Dempsey Roll, while Alfredo asks if it is okay to not hold back. Alfredo's coach allows Alfredo to let loose, and Kamogawa, after placing ice on Ippo's swollen right eye, allows it as well.

Elsewhere, in Mexico, Ricardo meets Lisa while he doing his morning roadwork. Ricardo asks if she is worried as Alfredo might have trouble since Ippo uses a very powerful technique. Lisa tells Ricardo that Alfredo is doing his best against Ippo in order to get another chance to fight him. Ricardo claims he knows how strong Alfredo is with his two faces, noting that Alfredo is hard to deal with in his dangerous Mextli Mode, where he fights how he originally did. Lisa asks Ricardo if he think Alfredo can win, but Ricardo claims that she is better off asking God. Back in Japan, as the sixth round begins, Ippo enters the figure-eight weaving motion of the Dempsey Roll as he moves towards Alfredo, who looks confused. Everyone in the audience is excited to see the technique begin, while Date notes how he gets chills every time he sees it, wondering if he would still win if Ippo had it back when he fought him. Puzzled by what Ippo is doing, Alfredo walks towards the violent movements and grins as he wonders what he is looking at. Sendō thinks that Alfredo is going to take on the Dempsey Roll head on. Alfredo's coach notes that the Mextli Mode is his original boxing style born from a man who used his fists to survive on the streets. He adds that the ruthless attacks earned him his nickname, and it can be compared to street fighting. Alfredo tracks where Ippo is moving, and, when Ippo begins throwing the first left hook of the Dempsey Roll, Alfredo begins to throw a punch as well. At first, Ippo thinks Alfredo is trying to do the Dempsey Break, however, Kamogawa, Miyata, and Sendō realise that Alfredo is just rushing into a head-on collision. Ippo's left hook hits Alfredo's arm as he threw a left straight. Ippo throws a right hook next as Alfredo throws a right straight, but they both miss as Alfredo's arm hits Ippo's shoulder. Fujii notices Alfredo is throwing full swings, which Mari thinks is unfathomable since Alfredo is ahead in points so he doesn't need to fight so offensively. Alfredo is sick with anger, as even though Ippo has power, toughness, and stamina, it is all he has and is like a boxer out of the stone age, planning to teach him that he can't take on the world. He is irritated that Ippo underestimates the world stage as to Alfredo, the world means Ricardo.

Ippo vs Alfredo 02

Alfredo stops Ippo's Dempsey Roll.

As Ippo and Alfredo continue throwing full powered punches that miss, Miyata sees that Alfredo is slowly starting to match up the Dempsey Roll's punches despite all the weaving Ippo is doing. Yagi wonders if Alfredo has studied the Dempsey Roll, but Kamogawa claims he hasn't, as he saw with the other counters, he guesses that it is the first time Alfredo has seen the Dempsey Roll, otherwise he would have shut it down more cleanly. Kamogawa adds that Alfredo seems to be searching for an angle to land a counter by diving in each time. Alfredo's coach thinks that Alfredo is more angry than cautious now, as him facing Ricardo again mean a lot to him, as well as he found Ippo lacking the right to face him. He tells his other second that Mextli Mode is a double edge sword, as even though his offence is more powerful, his defence is lower, and the more he gets agitated, the higher the risks. He adds that Alfredo can't stop, since he is too angry to calm down and lost control, reverting him back to his original style that took him the furthest against Ricardo. As Alfredo is throwing a left to counter Ippo's left hook of the Dempsey Roll, Ippo stops the attack. Alfredo is unable to stop, and throws his left straight. As Ippo continues the attack, Alfredo stops the Dempsey Roll by pressing his body onto Ippo's stretched out left arm and chest, preventing the arm from moving. Sendō is amazed by Alfredo's instincts, and Miyata feels as if Alfredo keeps smothering every last hope Ippo has. Ippo thinks that nothing he has learned works on Alfredo now, but Kamogawa yells out to think about where he is now, grit his teeth, tighten his sides, put up his guard, dig in his legs, and stand strong. Ippo realises that he is at the range he is best at as he steps back a bit and enters the stance of the Brawling Style. Alfredo does the same, signalling a face-off at the centre of the ring.

Ippo and Alfredo's close range exchange match

Ippo and Alfredo's close range exchange match.

As the audience state their confusion as to why Alfredo agreed to fight on Ippo's terms, Alfredo's coach understands why they're confused, as Alfredo has lost his temper, he rage is in control now. Kamogawa doesn't know why Alfredo decided to fight it out as well, wondering if Ippo won the opportunity due to his perseverance or if it is a trap, but now Ippo has a glimmer of hope, so the situation has changed. He notes how Ippo doesn't have to use the Dempsey Roll at close range and can just use his usual boxing, tapping into everything he has, and rely on his courage. Ippo and Alfredo begin their close range exchange. Their punches miss at first, then Alfredo begins guarding, and when one punch hits his face, Alfredo spins his neck to nullify the damage. Alfredo begins pulling his arms closer to his body and landing shots through holes in Ippo's sturdy guard. The audience start thinking that Ippo is losing and his legs are shaking. Alfredo plans to make the audience quiet by making them realise it was stupid to expect anything from Ippo. Date notices Alfredo's expression looks like he is either happy, angry, or both, which he thinks is what makes him different from Ricardo. Mashiba thinks Alfredo is fighting on pure rage, comparing him to Sawamura. Alfredo's coach remembers how he put a mask on Alfredo to make him more like Ricardo when he noticed how talented he was when he first saw him. He remembers that Alfredo grew in a part of town where the only form of self-defence was to viciously attack people as if he was a wild animal, and surviving on the street with his fists made him too emotional. He remembers how Alfredo would be savage against his opponents in spars and matches, making him a vicious fighter but also a fragile one who wasn't afraid of getting hit, so he forced him to use Ricardo's textbook style, which also helped him keep his emotions in check. He sees now that the style Alfredo is using now is the perfect combination of savagery weighed against reason.

Ippo hits Alfredo's one-handed block that causes his brain to rattle

Ippo hits Alfredo's one-handed block that causes his brain to rattle.

Even though Alfredo's punches are hitting Ippo's block, Ippo still feels great pain and wobbles from them. Ippo gets hit by a clean left hook, making him reel back. From the low position, Ippo fires a liver blow, but it hits Alfredo's block. Ippo gets hit again before continuing to block. Fujii wonders if Ippo can back off and catch his breath or go for a clinch, but Miyata points out that those aren't tools that he can use to win, as Ippo's only way he emerges victorious is if he wins an in-fight. While hitting Ippo's guard, Alfredo is angry that Ippo won't fall, as people will start thinking his punches are weak. Alfredo is surprised that Ippo is still fighting back as he blocks an attack. As Alfredo sends out a left jab, Ippo ducks to the left and Alfredo blocks his body, expecting another liver blow. However, Ippo aims his throw from below to Alfredo's face, which Alfredo blocks with one hand, making his brain rattle. Ippo takes the chance and throws a right straight. Alfredo throws a right straight as well, and both boxers get hit by the dual exchange. Alfredo recovers first and throws a left hook, however, it misses and he falls with the momentum of the throw, causing a down, as the referee judged that the fall was from the damage from the dual exchange. As the count begins, Kamogawa yells out to Ippo that the fight isn't over yet so he should take deep breaths. Ippo is glad that his boxing has now been proven that it can work on the world stage. At the count of five, Alfredo sits up and wonders what happened. He remembers seeing Ippo throwing a punch and then it went black, which he knows he has been in a dark place before, searching for light. Alfredo gets up at the count of eight, but he is on shaky feet. As soon as the referee continues the match, Ippo begins moving toward Alfredo. Kamogawa knows that Ippo has pulled off a come back many times in the past, and he has the courage and power to overcome even the most hopeless situation. He then remembers Wally and Miguel again, wondering why he keeps recalling them. Ippo ducks left as he dodges a left jab, and hits Alfredo's arm with a liver blow that hurts him despite the block. As Ippo and Alfredo throw a right straight, the referee daringly runs and ducks between the two as the sixth round ends.

Alfredo seeing Ricardo as his light

At Ippo's corner, Kamogawa praises Ippo for turning the tables. Ippo tells Kamogawa how he was able to knock down the second ranked in the world. Kamogawa tells Ippo that Alfredo has taken serious damage and is clearly hurting, as well as some mental damage, so he advises to not let him recover and to bring everything he has got to him. Ippo asks if he should end it in the seventh round. Kamogawa answers that that is the plan. At Alfredo's corner, Alfredo wants to know how he got knocked down. Alfredo's coach is surprised how much damage Ippo did with one hit to the head. Alfredo's coach instructs Alfredo to keep using Mextli Mode, but to not forget what he has been looking for and chasing after: Quetzalcóatl, the Sun God. He reminds Alfredo that he is the one who has flown closet to the sun, Ricardo. Alfredo remembers when he was a child that he was always staring at the light in the dark alleys with fists clenched in his pockets while thinking how he always wanted to get to the light where Ricardo is.

Alfredo counters Ippo's right straight

Alfredo counters Ippo's right straight.

As the seventh round begins, Fujii comments how Alfredo knows how strong Ippo is now, so he doubts that he will come out swinging, but if he backs out like he did in the earlier rounds, Ippo may not be able to touch him. Kamogawa yells out to Ippo to not expect Alfredo to come to him, so he should bring the fight to him. However, it is Alfredo who makes the first move as he gets into close range and throws a left hook that Ippo barely ducked in time. Ippo blocks against Alfredo's full powered punches, but his legs are shaky. Ippo ducks left to dodge a left jab, and then sends a left uppercut from his ducking position. Alfredo thought it would be a liver blow so he barely dodged the uppercut, and he wobbles afterwards. One of Alfredo's seconds ask Alfredo's coach why he let him continue using the Mextli Mode, as he remembers how his anger was exploited in his world title match, so Alfredo might get hit again. Alfredo's coach admits that Ippo is strong, and while Alfredo has always been able to keep in-fighters like Ippo away with technique and overwhelm them, this time he is fighting someone different with unbelievable resilience, seemingly limitless stamina, and he gains momentum then closes in like a tornado, so if Alfredo backs off now, he will get sucked in. Alfredo is thankful his coach reminded him of his goal: the Quetzalcóatl called Ricardo, who Alfredo sees as the Death God. Alfredo describes Ricardo as someone who will put an end to his opponent without a single trace of emotion on his face, and while he may seem like a gentleman on the surface, underneath all of that is ferocious violent person, with the only difference between them is the light. Alfredo throws a right straight that Ippo dodges while throwing a right overhand that Alfredo blocks with his left hand. Alfredo thinks how he uses anger to suppress hesitation and fear, but doesn't lose control and always looks for the light in the darkness, as intelligence and reason is what he learned from Ricardo. Alfredo counters Ippo's right straight. Ippo almost tips over, but he stays standing, shocking Alfredo as he thought that should have done it.

Alfredo defeating Ippo

Ippo, unable to reach the world as he gets hit by Alfredo's right.

Ippo gets close to Alfredo and begins throwing a barrage of punches at Alfredo's guard. Alfredo, after getting hit with a right straight, relies on his anger to suppress fear and hesitation to start throwing punches as well, starting an exchange. Both boxers get hit by powerful punches, and the exchange ends after a strong left uppercut from a lowered position hits Alfredo, sending his back to the ropes. Ippo is glad that his boxing is working, and wishes to take Kamogawa to the world stage together as he approaches Alfredo. As everyone enthusiastically awaits Ippo's approach, Kamogawa remembers Wally and Miguel again, but he then realises that he is only remembering Miguel's words when he warned him that Ippo's strength will also be his downfall and that they are headed straight for a great disaster, wondering what he meant. Alfredo remembers how he has always been chasing after Ricardo and wanting to catch up, coming back to his senses and sees Ippo in front of him. As Ippo throws a right straight, everyone cheers for him as Kamogawa watches in horror. Alfredo throws a right straight of his own, which hits Ippo before Ippo was able to land his. Ippo goes down, leaving the audience silent, and the referee ends the match in Alfredo's victory as Kamogawa goes into the ring and Alfredo raises his fists in celebration.

Kamogawa yelling out for Ippo to wake up after being defeated by Alfredo

Kamogawa yelling out for Ippo to wake up after being defeated by Alfredo.

As Kamogawa tries to get Ippo, who shows no signs of movement, to respond, and a stretcher is called into the ring, Date thinks Kamogawa made the right choice in not even waiting for the count due to Alfredo's right counter hitting Ippo as he made a big swing. Takamura thinks how Ippo was knocked out by a single punch, but believes Ippo may have not been conscious before that. Itagaki is terrified at the fact that Ippo has lost. Alfredo sits at the top of one of his seconds' shoulders while raising his fists up. As Ippo still hasn't moved, Alfredo's coach tells Alfredo that it isn't his fault, as that could have been him in Ippo's place, so he had to do what he had to do. As Ippo starts sitting up, a worried Kamogawa frighteningly asks if Ippo recognises him. Watching from afar, Takamura wishes that Kamogawa would not make a pained expression, as he still has him. Ippo looks around and realises he lost. Ippo stands up, wanting to walk on his own. As he walks, he stumbles and has to lean on Alfredo who was nearby to not fall. Alfredo shoves him off and Ippo walks with his seconds. Alfredo tells his coach how he is annoyed that he can still walk on his own despite everything he did to him. Alfredo thinks that Ippo is unremarkable technically, but he still felt something inside of him that he had to stop and prevent him from going to Ricardo. Alfredo tells his coach he will be going back home to Mexico proudly. As Alfredo walks out of the ring, Miyata and Sendō glares at him.

Takamura after watching Ippo vs Alfredo

Takamura thinking about the result of Ippo vs. Alfredo.

Outside the venue, Imai sees how everyone is talking about Ippo and Alfredo's match as Imai thinks everyone forgot about his match. Imai remembers how Ippo tried to end it but punched so hard that it made the swing too wide, so Alfredo countered with a punch that would only hit if it travelled the shortest path possible, He thinks how it shows that there is always someone better, and after seeing Miyata and Sendō walk pass him, it helps confirm his belief. Imai is congratulated by Fujii and Mari on his victory, but Imai claims that while he has the belt, he can't claim to be the best in Japan. Fujii tells Mari how Ippo came back with the Dempsey Roll after his first loss, and wonders what Ippo will bring next, as it could be hope or despair. Date finds Takamura sitting at the ring in the venue. Date comments that with boxing, there are days like this, so it wasn't the Kamogawa gym's night, but the sun will rise again. Takamura knows, however, he thinks what happened should not have happened. Ippo apologises to Kamogawa, who tells him to take some time off, and once the doctors finish checking him, to come to the gym. As Ippo walks home with the company of Aoki, Kimura, and Itagaki, he asks where Takamura is. Aoki and Kimura claim that he would just talk trash so they are better without him. Ippo asks them what hit him at the end and what kind of match was it. Aoki and Kimura answers that he scored a down and he almost had Alfredo. Ippo claims he wants to get stronger and one day go to the ring again.
