Winner Takes All Arc[]

Ippo defeating Fukui in a spar

Fukui getting defeated by Ippo.

Deciding to retire from boxing, Fukui went to the Kamogawa gym, wanting to spar against the JBC featherweight champion Ippo Makunouchi in order to make some good memories before retiring. Before the spar began, Kamogawa criticised Fukui's coach, Tsukahara, and told Ippo that if he doesn't knockout Fukui by the first round, he would be kicked out. Kamogawa's insults towards Tsukahara and underestimating him made Fukui angry, making him fight Ippo not using his usual style and got knocked out in the first round in two minutes and fifty-two seconds. Fukui left after hearing Kamogawa call Tsukahara a failure. Fukui was followed by Ippo, who wanted to show him the way to the train station since Fukui wasn't from Tokyo. On the way there, Fukui expressed his gratitude towards Ippo for the spar, as he now has no regrets on retiring. Fukui explained what happened in his match against Malcolm Gedo when Ippo attempted to get Fukui to not retire, as he mentioned how he couldn't be proud of the bogus victory and the cheering of the audience. Learning that Ippo has a match against Gedo planned, Fukui pleaded for him to win and warned him about Gedo using some sort of magic to distort one's depth perception. As Fukui walked away, planning to retrace his steps back to the train station, he announced to Ippo that he decided to not retire in order to show Kamogawa that Tsukahara is not a failure, and hoped to see Ippo inside the ring one day.

Later, Fukui and Tsukahara went to the Kōrakuen Hall to watch Ippo's match against Gedo. As the match was starting, they were approached by Mari Īmura, who wanted their comments about Gedo. During the first round, Fukui told Mari how he wanted Ippo to win quickly, since the longer it takes, the more Gedo will capitalise on his cunning, which is why he is known as the "magician". During the sixth round as Ippo was having trouble against Gedo, Mari wondered what is happening. Fukui revealed to her that it is his depth perception, which has been became distorted for Ippo at some point and it has caused him to have the disadvantage the whole time. Fukui watched as Ippo defeated Gedo in the eighth round by knockout.
