References in Hajime no Ippo[]
- In Round 181, prior to Ippo Makunouchi's JBC title match against Eiji Date, Minoru Fujii watched Ippo spar against Tatsuya Kimura at the Kamogawa gym, where he practiced throwing punches at a clinching distance. While watching, Fujii remembered what Hamada once said: that a fist only needs 10 cm to cause damage, because at that distance, a person has enough time to put all the energy from their legs into their arms and into their fist.
- In Round 360, when Kyōsuke Imai was introducing himself to Ippo before their spar, Imai claimed that he looked up to both Ippo and former world champion Hamada. The anime removes the mention of Hamada.
- In Round 421, while on the fishing boat, Ippo is staring off toward Okinawa prior to his JBC title defence against Iwao Shimabukuro, where he remembered that Okinawa had turned out a lot of world champions in the past like Yōkō Gushiken, Hamada, Katsuo Tokashiki, Tadashi Tomori, Yasutsune Uehara, and Akinobu Hiranaka.

Morikawa on Excite Match with Hamada.
- In Volume 70, Jōji Morikawa appeared on an episode of "Excite Match", a Japanese boxing program that shows boxing matches, where Hamada appears as a commentator.
